There will always people that truly need help and should get it, but there are also a very large percentage of people who will work the system and take what should be given to someone else. I wish someone would come up with a way to solve the problem...I don't believe a big governmennt beaurocracy is capable of fixing the problem without big changes. And we arleady know how slow our government moves.

My family has recently needed help due to my lost business and medical problems....I'm lucky to have friends and family to help us....I can't imagine having to wait for government help (nor would I want it unless it was a last resort).

Our justice system says you are innocent until proven guilty. The Left believes benefits should be handed out whether you really need them or not. Because people sucking on the goverment tit are more likely to vote for Perlmutter, Polis, and Obama. A nation of dependents is a beautiful thing right?

Food stamps are nothing new when it comes to abuse. I used to work retail, and had lots of abuse come thru. Some people would make those dollars stretch as far as they could, others would buy junk. Others would sell them for cash/drugs. Others would use their food stamps to buy whatever food, then drop $200 on video tapes and lottery tickets.

I don't think the majority abuse the system, but there definitely is a minority who does. I don't think you are going to stop that unless you go back to a specific "WIC" type system, where the food "stamps" can only purchase specific items. That changed when I was working. We had a seminar on how to act when customers paid, and that all payment forms are the same. We weren't allowed to judge what was purchased.

Drug testing all food stamp recipients would be a good start to weed out some. One thing I did notice....the known drug users were all abusers of the system.

The system is ok, but like all govt systems (entitlements/defense/govt contracting/govt offices) abuse is way too easy. I wouldn't get rid of it, but I'd definitely change some things.

Gee, those of you who didn't get government help who are on the right sound bitter. Did you ask for it and get rejected? What's with that?

I was in the same boat and the only thing I went to the gov. for was to get my snake of an ex to pay child support. My family and friends helped me out.

I don't know many people who have been on welfare/food stamps, but one friend was on welfare for 18 mos. and got off of it as quickly as she could. She used the system the way in which it was intended. And there are plenty of people like her.

Any system that exists is abused. It doesn't excuse it, but let's put this in perspective.

I saw a woman buy a huge pork roast at Safeway the other day with food stamps. Nothing else. Does that mean that her family will eat that and only that for a while? Are they down to the last of their food stamps for the month. How sad if that's the case. But, of course, it is conjecture just like what some of you have "observed." You don't really know what the circumstances are yet you're quick to judge.

Right - so if you fall on hard times and need food stamps, I'm going to require you to get rid of any extraneous belongings outside of your bed, bedclothes, clothing, and somewhere to store them. I will require you to do the same for your kids - no toys, no nothing except their bed, school supplies and clothing. I will require you to move away from here and into very small tract housing in Denver. Oh, and if you are fertile, I require your sterilization so you don't have any kids or any more kids, no matter how short lived your time on state or federal aid is.

If you get your social security, I require the same things of you. Same with disability.

Because gods know, if you had those things when times were good, then you certainly do not deserve them if you lose a job through no fault of your own or through health issues, no matter how quick you find a new job.
