Welcome to the nanny state: Senate panel criminalizes sex between legal adults in 'Hot for Teacher' bills
It will be a felony for adult students to have sex with teachers or any other employee at their school, if the Senate Judiciary Committee gets its way.
Right now, it's illegal for teachers to have sex with kids under the age of majority, which makes perfect sense. But new legislation that passed the Judiciary committee this week would cover students of any age -- which could technically mean a teacher could get 15 years in prison for poking an adult education student of 45.
Talk about the nanny state run amok. It's no wonder many are calling these the "Hot for Teacher" bills.
What the bills are really about is protecting the virtue of 18-year-olds still in high school. (If we're being honest, it's really about the idea of 18-year-old girls getting preyed upon).
Damn it... and I was planing on hitting on this 80 year old babe in my "Breathing to Stay Alive" class that I'm teaching over at the Evergreen Seniors' Resource Center.
I'm undecided on whether this should be a law (as there are already more than enough dumb laws regarding the topic of sex on the books in various states), but it absolutely is morally reprehensible, and should be wrong, that a student-teacher relationship is breached in this manner. When there is a position of power involved, such as employer-direct report employee, or student-teacher, that's a line that shouldn't be crossed. If the relationship is that important, wait until graduation, or find another job. Just my opinion.
"Now, more than ever, the illusions of division threaten our very existence. We all know the truth: more connects us than separates us. But in times of crisis the wise build bridges, while the foolish build barriers. We must find a way to look after one another as if we were one single tribe.” -King T'Challa, Black Panther

As stated in the article, this law would be all inclusive, and cover anyone and everyone of legal age. That's my problem with it. Do adults have to have a law to cover every voluntary action they can perform that may result in a problem or embarrassment? And there are work place romances all over the business world, what makes adult teacher/students any difference than adult boss/co-worker, adult preacher/parishioner or adult research department head/female scientist? The left is always fighting for the rights of alternative lifestyle participants... but a normal adult heterosexual relationship suddenly needs to be on some do/don't list? Bullsh**e.
I would think this would bother you? It's sponsored by two Republicans.

Ok... that's two people out of four people on this thread that didn't read the link to the whole article. And you wonder why some people here sound so stupid.
