Iran warns of closing strategic Hormuz oil route

Here we go again...

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran's navy chief warned Wednesday that his country can easily close the strategic Strait of Hormuz at the mouth of the Persian Gulf, the passageway through which a sixth of the world's oil flows.

[snip]

The threats underline Iranian concern that the West is about to impose new sanctions that could target Tehran's vital oil industry and exports.

In response, the Bahrain-based U.S. 5th Fleet's spokeswoman warned that any disruption "will not be tolerated." The spokeswoman, Lt. Rebecca Rebarich, said the U.S. Navy is "always ready to counter malevolent actions to ensure freedom of navigation."

One way or another... this administration is going to find a way to get us involved in another expensive war. It's almost like the Bush clan was still in office.

Why do you think so?

I do not believe Iran will try to close the Straits. We rained some hell on them this day, I doubt they have forgotten.

Er... hmmm... oh... I don't know... I guess... could be... well... maybe because we said so? We'll go to war with Iran, alright, whether under Obama or the next President.

In spite of your Don Rickles act, I thought you were smarter than that. The two statements above are inconsistent.

The first says that the admin. is looking for a war to get into, any war.

The second is an O-3 PAO who said we will not allow the Straits to be closed down.

So... you don't think that we would fight an open war with Iran if they closed the straits down? (P.S. have you been drinking... you really f'ked up the quotes on that reply)

It's not that we would not, its that we would not have too.

A portion of my life was spent in keeping the Straits of Hormuz open. Our Navy is smaller now and the technology is generations advanced to what we had, but I think we still have a sufficient advantage that it would not result in open war.

"Operation Earnest Will (24 July 1987 – 26 September 1988) was the U.S. military protection of Kuwaiti owned tankers from Iranian attacks in 1987 and 1988, three years into the Tanker War phase of the Iran–Iraq War.[1] It was the largest naval convoy operation since World War II.

The U.S. Navy warships that escorted the tankers, part of U.S. Naval Forces Central Command, were the most visible part of the operation, but U.S. Air Force AWACS radar planes provided surveillance and Army special operations helicopters hunted for possible attackers"

Agreed, there are too many other nations that would take Iran's attempt to close and hold the Straight of Hormuz as a deliberate act of war. The US would likely have to coordinate with other forces in the region to avoid friendly fire incidents. Geographically the Straight of Hormuz is a small place, from one point of view that should make it easy to defend - nothing could be further from the truth. Iran would have to invest most of their naval resources to begin a blockade and once Iran proclaimed they had control of the Straight attacks would come from the surface and under the sea, land, and air. Iran would run out of ships fast and the disruption to shipping through the straight would be over with fairly quickly.

I think this is just more saber rattling on Iran's part, they happen to be holding a large multi-service exercise and deploying ships to the Gulf of Oman is a big part of that exercise.

I can explain it to you but I can't understand it for you.

I think Iran is just saber rattling here. Closing down the strait would hurt them worse than us. And I think the US Navy would love to test their new tech on live targets. Downside, the ranges are so short there, a couple lucky hits by the Iranians could cause huge losses.

:yeahthat: I also think Russia and China would finally be on board with the rest of the world....blocking the stait would hurt everyoone in an already shaky world economy. Their ships would be gone very quickly without the need for a war.

The left is angry because they are now being judged by the content of their character and not by the color of their skin.
