Once a PM leaves my computer I should have no expectation of privacy, same as if I mail a letter.

Then we should just shut down the PM system and have a PM forum. There would be no need for private messages. The system is here as a courtesy just like Gmail or other sites like FB that has a PM system but it makes it possible to contact people in the community without having their email address. And you know them through the forum.

There is a need for PMs, but if someone sends me an inappropriate PM I should have the option of making it public. If you and I were kibitzing about my road trip yesterday (not particularly forum-worthy) it's just a conversation between friends. Why set up a PM forum for that? Nasty PMs should be allowed to see the light of day.

PC, I am not bashing you here it is just that they are a perfect example of the many, many people that have been banned. They cannot use the PM system to contact people about business, etc. in the community. That is one of the great, helpful things about these forums in a community.

And there is a Preference setting to not receive PMs as well.

Just my two cents.

If a PM rises to the level of requiring legal/law enforcement intervention then I would assume that the recipient would contact the management of the site and have it dealt with. Anything lesser, the recipient should be able to publicize it here.

The whole point of a forum is to offer anonymity. If you are posting a private message from someone else, then they no longer have control over their own personal information, and they should have that right.

Now, should all involved parties agree to make a private message public, I personally see no problem with that. However, if one of the parties should change their mind later and want it pulled, then I would think that the information would then be pulled.

"Now, more than ever, the illusions of division threaten our very existence. We all know the truth: more connects us than separates us. But in times of crisis the wise build bridges, while the foolish build barriers. We must find a way to look after one another as if we were one single tribe.” -King T'Challa, Black Panther

If the PM is quoted using the senders nic, is that considered personal information?

I'm not arguing with you, wanting the site to be run according to me, I'm just curious.

I sent a PM from me to me.

It said "Hi!"

Unless you see a screen shot it is still hearsay as far as I am concerned. And even a screen shot could be altered in today's world of photo shop that might not even be true. Unless the other person agrees then it is just hearsay.

If you use the quote system it just brings up text that could be altered very easily. It has happened in posts on this forum.

Just my personal opinion.

Just a few posts that I found by doing a simple search.....

Good points. I hadn't thought of the screen shot/photo shop situation inasmuch as that's beyond my ability. And it wouldn't occur to me ethically to edit someone's PM to me when posting it. If a PM hacks me off I would want to righteously post it so others could see why I'm pissed and be angry along with me. :)

Silly me, I thought the purpose of a "discussion" forum was to exchange dialog and exchange thoughts and beliefs and to provide information.

Once a PM leaves my computer I should have no expectation of privacy, same as if I mail a letter.

Seems to me that a pm is uniquely mine until it lands in the inbox of the recipient. Then it is out of my hands.
Mtn Gramma....I couldn't agree more.

No one should ever assume anonymity on internet forums. That is a mistake that I've seen made and later regretted.

Everyone posting should assume that your name and address are contained within each post. Write as if you were standing on a street corner shouting it out.

Thank you for your question Mtn Gramma. Yes, a senders nic would be considered personal information as that is the purpose of using the Private Message system rather than posting a message to you publicly on the forum. And the PM itself is also personal information as the message is meant to be private, or again they would've just posted it on the forum.
