What does American exceptionalism mean to you?

I always thought it meant a country of immigrants that did not buy into aristocracy or birthright.
What does this term mean for you?

For me, it was a melting pot of the bravest and boldest willing to risk everything to get here and live without boundaries.

I always figured the slackers and easily scared just stayed in their home countries putting up with the crap.

New stats from Forbes, over 200+ of the Fortune 500 corporations were founded by immigrants or the children of immigrants.

I think it's in the eye of the beholder... I'm sure people in other countries feel the same way about their country as I do of mine. However, there is a reason why so many people want to get in this country, legally and illegally... there is still a greater opportunity to succeed, even when politicians do their best to make that goal more difficult. This country was founded on freedom and liberty, and as they erode, so will our exceptionalism. IMO

The left is angry because they are now being judged by the content of their character and not by the color of their skin.

How about this...

"The specific term "American exceptionalism" was first used in 1929 by Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin chastising members of the Lovestone-led faction of the American Communist Party for the heretical belief that America was independent of the Marxist laws of history "thanks to its natural resources, industrial capacity, and absence of rigid class distinctions." [/b][/i]

Anything that pisses Stalin off (and the political left in this country) is good enough for me.

I'm thinking the bolded portion is more likely to piss of the conservative right......they do so love their class distinctions, and work hard at preserving them. They also absolutely love plundering our natural resources rather than protecting them.......and industrial capacity is great, as long as they get to reap the rewards and not share them with the nation. yep.....I guess the political right are communists!!!!!!

Talk about making assumptions about the right! One of the great things about America is how so many people rise out of squalor. Families sending a kid to college for the first time. And people who have won and lost fortunes multiple times in their lives.
I don't know anyone on the American right who believes in a class system.

I was watching a British talk show this weekend and was shocked to see how hung up they are still on class distinctions and posh etc.

And one of the rare examples of a class system in America? It is the liberal Ivy League colleges that let unqualified kids in just because their parents had gone there at one time. A legacy.
