Totally agree with the OP, we have been electing politicians for the past few decades that promise us more benefits and bigger tax cuts.
Plus the system is skewed. For instance, corporate welfare, NASCAR got a payout in this latest last minute deal, big money for them, but to the normal taxpayer, it is only peanuts. People & corporations fight hard to get their cuts of the giant trillion dollar pie but no one fights that hard if they know their taxes will only go up a penny from the latest pork bill.
And we pay for it with increased debt, $1 dollar of added debt for every three dollars spent.
