Welllll, how lucky that it jammed... And ONLY 12 people got killed and ONLY 70 got injured. Isn't it a shame that his brand-new 100-round magazine didn't perform up to snuff... Then you could be so much more proud of the damage it would have done.
Pathetic.
And the speed with which trained, practiced gun-nut wackos can switch out magazines means little to me. You get some moron like Holmes who bought it with mayhem-in-mind may or MAY NOT have been able to do so. If it hadn't been for the delay in switching magazines in Tucson allowing a tackle of the shooter in the Giffords event, who knows how many more he could have killed....

Your prerecorded talking-points are getting tiresome.
And yours aren't pre-recorded?
Good news. If LJ's laws are passed, we can charge James Holmes in addition to multiple murders violating the penal code by having a large capacity magazine. That will keep him in jail an extra year.
Or we could fine Lanza's estate $5000 for violating the no weapons on school grounds rule. That will show him.

Yes...Or we could put a Colorado gun-wacko who's been convicted of a minor "violent misdemeanor" away for 10 years for just being in possession of one.

Of course they would have. James Holmes legally purchased an AR-15 with a 100 round magazine, firing 27 shots in 30 seconds. More people could have escaped had he been limited to a 10 round magazine.
But didn't that 100 round drum magazine jam, essentially rendering his AR useless? There is a reason official tactical LEOs and others don't use those things. Trained people can change a normal magazine in 2 -3 seconds.
Edit to add: Felons already do face significant sanctions for being in possession of a firearm. That doesn't seem to have any effect, However I see nothing wrong with increasing those penalties including for those who knowingly supply firearms to felons.
The magazine jammed after he fired 27 shots in 30 seconds. And of course James Holmes was not trained, just walked in off the street, bought AR-15, 9mm Glock semi, high capacity magazines and thousands of rounds of ammo.
I am not an advocate of simply banning military style weapons, but of increasing the comprehensiveness of background checks, requiring background checks on private sales, periodic renewal of background checks (to ensure no restraining orders, required meds being taken, no felony convictions, etc), a requirement for advanced safety (extending to necessity of properly storing weapons from inappropriate access) in order to possess assault style weapons, and strict liability on those who do not follow requirements on the sale and storage of such weapons.

I was hoping we could keep this an actual discussion instead of deteriorating into the usual crap.
So lets say large magazines are banned. That will stop deaths? Don't think so. Holmes probably would have purchased multiple guns legally or illegally. As one was emptied he would pick up and use another. Probably less chance of jamming too.
Some times our gubment needs to step out of the way. We have plenty of tea party reps and senators in Colorado. Time to get in touch with them and see how they will be voting on the various stupid bills put forward.
IN NOVEMBER 2014, WE HAVE A GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY TO CLEAN OUT THE ENTIRE HOUSE AND ONE-THIRD OF THE SENATE! DONT BLOW IT!
“When white man find land, Indians running it, no taxes, no debt, plenty buffalo, plenty beaver, clean water. Women did all the work, Medicine man free. Indian man spend all day hunting and fishing; all night having sex. Only whit man dumb enough to think he could improve system like that.” Indian Chief Two Eagles
The more anti-gun bills that come out just might be what is needed to get the people in Colorado to step up and let their reps know to back off.

Good. En masse should get the message across.
