California leading the way on the economy

Since the Democrats have taken back control of the California government, California is leading the nation in job creation
"California contributed more than 15 percent of the nation’s new jobs between October 2011 and October 2012 - adding more jobs in 12 months than Texas and the rest of the other top-10 fastest-growing states combined - while home building is bouncing back and demand for houses is increasing."

And
"Of the 171,000 new jobs the entire U.S. added in October, 27 percent were in California. And since the beginning of the year, California has added nearly 300,000 jobs, outperforming Texas by a decent margin and outpacing New York by more than 2 to 1."

Unemployment fell from the above 10 percent level that it suffered under the Republican control to the highest growth of new jobs in the country.

If we can only hang on until we get the GOP clowns out of the House, then we will see an improved economy.

Of course they were above 10% and still are above the national average so they have a way to go. Were part of the gains due to people leaving California? U-Haul stats show more people leaving than coming in.

Wow... U-Haul stats must be the "definitive answer"...(Unless, of course, TheBlaze and Glenn Beck have a different theory)...

Perhaps a lot of it is because they've found multiple ways around the onerous TABOR-style laws of the 80's that crippled their ability to pay their bills. Amazing what you can get done when you get the radical "no-taxers" out of the way.

The trend of people leaving CA was caused by the policies of the CA GOP. Now that the economy is turning around, that trend will be reversing as the rate of new jobs keeps growing.

Wow, that CBS article reads more like a political ad than a news story. Why did they choose to compare California to Texas, Oregon, and West Virginia? Well, I'll just accept those states and let's look at the numbers...

Unemplyment rates seasonally adjusted Dec 2012:

Calif: 9.8%
Texas: 6.1%
Oregon: 8.4%
W. Virginia: 7.5%

http://www.bls.gov/web/laus/laumstrk.htm

So California has a higher unemployment rate than any of the other states mentioned in the article. And it is much higher than Texas, which is closest to Calif in population. Why didn't the article mention that? But let me ask, if the economy is starting to turn who is going to generally create more jobs? A state with a very high unemployment rate, or one with a low unemployment rate? I'd say it would usually be the state with the high unemployment rate since there are a higher percentage of workers availabe to take a job.

Now lets look at population (as of July 1, 2012 from the link below):

Calif: 38,041,430
Texas: 26,059,203
Oregon: 3,899,353
W. Virginia: 1,855,413

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._states_and_territories_by_population

By my math, Calif has about 16% more people than the other three states combined. So all things being equal in regards to the number of jobs created, just based on population alone Calif should lead them by about 16% jobs created (an estimate because total population isn't the same as working population, but it should be close enough).

So Calif should have more jobs created just based on population alone, and probably more jobs created in a turning economy just because they are starting from the bottom in regards to their unemployment rate.

And all the article can talk about is the number of jobs created. That is a pretty meaningless number unless you look at the populations of the states involved and their unemployment rates.

Shhhh! Don't bring in unbiased facts. Let them read their rose colored slant. Like when NPR tried to spin Obama's high and stagnant unemployment numbers that the jobless were getting more family time and lowering the nation's gasoline consumption. And throwout the unbiased U-Haul numbers because they contradict their pep rally piece.

Actually, we've seen the "unbiased facts"...And they don't resemble the talking-points from the Rightie echo-chamber...

And as we all know, my unnamed, unspecified sources are more trustworthy than your unnamed, unspecified sources.

But it is entertaining...

Looks to me like the job numbers are roughly comparable with California's population percentage. Maybe Dog would like to show which specific California legislative acts led to these great job numbers? Looks like statistical cherry picking to me. GO California!

This thread will be interesting to re-visit in a year and see if California can sustain those numbers especially with the national economy contracting and state income taxes rising to 13%.
