JeffCo teacher turnover expected to increase - again
Nelson Garcia, KUSA
June 18, 2015

He points out that nearby districts Denver and Aurora have a much higher turnover rate than JeffCo -- around 22 percent.

I see - bad teachers leaving for other pastures in front of not receiving a passing grade on their reviews should be considered a bad thing for Jeffco students and parents for some odd reason? I mean, let's face it, an evaluation that returns anything less than about 10% - 15% in need of improvement is pretty much going to be an evaluation process that is utterly useless in weeding out the bad apples anyway, right? Any evaluation system worth a damn is going to result in a failure rate of 10%-15%, a success far above what is desired that is 15%-20% and an average result for the remaining 65% or so of the group being evaluated. After all, there is no "A for Effort" in the real world, is there?

I'm sorry to say that many of the teachers who are leaving are highly effective teachers who see greater opportunities in other districts.

I see - that's not what I'm hearing from the rank and file, but I can understand why that's the perception that others wish to paint to the general public. Jeffco is among the, if not the, highest paying district in the State. No one is going to leave the district for a lower paying job somewhere else, especially highly effective teachers whose pension benefits are dependent upon the average of their 3 highest years of earnings. State requirements are just that, State requirements. The only thing a teacher gets by moving to another district is lower pay and different evaluation standards. Since no one willingly looks for a lower paying job, that leaves evaluation standards and methods as the remaining choice for making a change and highly effective teachers don't need lesser standards to continue to be rated as highly effective teachers.

Good teachers who don't mind accountability aren't going to leave, unless they just want to relocate. Almost every job category has higher turnover when there are more job openings out there. I don't see this as any problem.

I also think it is great that the names of the teachers who participated in the sick out should be published.

Too bad future generations aren't here to see all the great things we are spending their $$ on!!

Yes, Ashley, Denver and Aurora have 6% higher turnover rates; they also have lesser reputations. Jeffco teachers felt they had the support of the board up until this last election so they were willing to make concessions such as agreeing to pay freezes until the economy picked back up and sticking it out through the tough times. Now, they feel this board isn't supporting them at all - how long might it take until Jeffco turnover rates equal Denver's and Aurora's?

Renegade, not everyone who called in that day were participating in the protest, and I know that from first-hand information. One of those who legitimately called in that day is worried that they will face repercussions when their name is made public and that's not right. They also don't wish to publicize why they called in, even if it means clearing their name. The stress they are suffering because they will be lumped in with those who protested is wrong. This was not the way to go about solving this problem - what good does it do to make those names public? It doesn't fix the lack of morale, or lack of transparency and lack of legal choices by the board majority.

No, not just "bad" teachers are leaving. Feel free to read their stories on the Jeffco Exodus Facebook page . Here's one which refutes that assumption quite clearly: www.facebook.com/jeffcoexodus/posts/443647252475230

I would like to see the pay comparisons as well, since this isn't the first story I've heard that those who are leaving are finding better salaries, including those who have been rated "highly effective".

"I am a highly effective teacher, I just finished my 8th year teaching, and I would like to get a graduate degree. I make $40,000 a year. In Jeffco I will make $50,000 near about 15 years of service. I decided to leave Jeffco to make a better salary for my family. Jeffco is the lowest paying school district in Denver that I can find for my current level of experience and education. The board majority decided to stop paying teachers for graduate work. That doesn't work for me. I hope that Jeffco turns around and I can return to teach in my own community. Until then I will work in a district where teachers feel supported by their community, respected, and enjoy a harmonious work environment."

Shows just how ignorant that teacher is SC. Jeffco stopped paying more for advanced degrees under the previous board, not this one, and it was well publicized at the time. That teacher could have, like my sister who teaches in Jeffco, buckled down and gotten their Master's degree in time to beat the deadline for the ending of more pay for advanced degrees. Not to mention that we have to take "anonymous" at their word that they are, indeed, rated as a highly effective teacher and that they have been teaching in the Jeffco district for 8 years.

As for your friend who was unfortunate enough to have had to miss a day of work while her irresponsible co-workers were out conducting their "sick-out", in violation of their contract oh by the way, she should be angry at her co-workers, not the district and the public who have a right to know who is putting union activity above their responsibilities to their students and a duty to make sure that steps are taken to lessen if not eradicate future acts of irresponsibility from that group. If a public shaming via publication of the names of the teachers who were absent that day accomplishes the goal of reducing or eliminating future incidents I'm good with that.

Well it is about time that they do something rather than just complain. If they are not satisfied then go through the process of removal.

Time will tell if there are really that many dissatisfied people or only a vocal few.

Oh goodie! We get to waste money on a recall election! Which part of the budget do the petitioners want to cut to pay for that?
