Seeking the accommodation required in the public square is not an attempt to require you to adopt the beliefs of others, but, like the government, you must also accommodate those with a religious belief in the public square, just as those with a religious belief must accommodate the beliefs of others. Neither you, nor any level of government, may be hostile to those of religious beliefs, which is why Colorado had to drop its persecution of Jack Phillips.
Allowing a child time to pray at school is not the same as requiring a child to pray at school. Allowing a pastor or priest to offer an invocation to watch over, guide, and protect those in attendance is not pushing their beliefs onto you. The display of a creche at Christmas, or the inclusion of the foundation of Judeo/Christian common, civil, and criminal laws governing our society is not pushing anyone's beliefs onto you. Like it or not, the Ten Commandments were a part of that history that your prejudice cannot erase.
Dating the Ten Commandments involves an interpretation of their purpose. Some scholars propose a date between the 16th and 13th centuries bce because Exodus and Deuteronomy connect the Ten Commandments with Moses and the Sinai Covenant between Yahweh and Israel. For those who regard the Ten Commandments as an epitome of prophetic teachings, the date would be sometime after Amos and Hosea (after 750 bce). If the Ten Commandments are simply a summary of the legal and priestly traditions of Israel, they belong to an even later period.
The Ten Commandments contain little that was new to the ancient world and reflect a morality common to the ancient Middle East. They are a description of the conditions accepted by the community of Israel in its relationship to Yahweh. The differences found in Exodus and Deuteronomy indicate that the process of transmission from generation to generation brought with it modifications.
The Ten Commandments had no particular importance in Christian tradition until the 13th century, when they were incorporated into a manual of instruction for those coming to confess their sins. With the rise of Protestant churches, new manuals of instruction in the faith were made available and the Ten Commandments were incorporated into catechisms as a fundamental part of religious training, especially of the young.

BECAUSE ,i have no formal religious background.....I was curious about the topic, this is what I found,
13 century is the timeframe it was brought into Christianity, prior to that date, the existence or concept was a description of the conditions accepted by the community of Israel in its relationship to Yahweh.
HOW VERY UNIQUE.
The commandments were a covenant between the Israelis and God (Deuteronomy 5), not a "description of the conditions accepted by the community of Israel in its relationship to Yahweh." Hence, the "Ark of the Covenant". I mean, if you are getting instruction from anywhere that can't even get that basic fact right, I don't know what to tell you HA.
That said, I do admire your intellectual inquisitiveness to do some actual research on the subject, even if it's a watered down version of the facts.
And although there may have been other laws/moral codes in use by many civilizations, what sets the Decalogue apart from those is that it was of divine origin, not the creation of humans, or humans who claimed to be gods such as the Egyptian pharaohs. That distinction contributes to our understanding that our unalienable rights are also of divine origin, endowed upon us by Nature and Nature's God and not a King, or by the government we have instituted.
That's why the Decalogue is an important part of the history of these United States, why it is featured so prominently in so many of our government buildings; it is one of the basis for our claim that our rights also come from the divine, and not mere men. The Magna Carta was a negotiated agreement between a King and barons, where the king ceded certain aspects of his power and authority via the compact. Thus, the rights of the English, and most other civilizations, were granted to the people by their King, their government, versus being endowed upon each individual by their Creator and unalienable to them unless by their actions they abused those rights and infringed upon the rights held by another (murder, for instance, or theft).
Understanding the importance of the Decalogue in the society which gave birth to our republic is essential to understanding the origin of our declaration that all men are created equal, endowed with rights which are unalienable from them. A concept championed by the likes of Thomas Aquinas and Thomas Locke.

HERE'S AN IDEA....READ THE GNOSTIC GOSPELS..BY PAGTEL (?)......I AM GNOSTIC IN MY BELIEF SYSTEM......THE "BIBLE" WAS AMENDED TO EXCLUDE MANY IDEAS, ESPECIALLY REGARDING WOMEN AND THEIR VITAL ROLE IN SOCIETY.....THE ROLE OF MARY M. WAS NOT A MINOR THING, AS THE BIBLE WOULD HAVE U BELIEVE......AFTER BEING RE TRANSLATED , BY MANY DIFFERENT WRITERS/RELIGIOUS LEADERS, THE WHOLENESS OF THE BIBLE HAS BEEN DENIGRATED.
The Nag Hammadi Library, a collection of thirteen ancient books (called "codices") containing over fifty texts, was discovered in upper Egypt in 1945. This immensely important discovery includes a large number of primary "Gnostic Gospels" – texts once thought to have been entirely destroyed during the early Christian struggle to define "orthodoxy" – scriptures such as the Gospel of Thomas, the Gospel of Philip, and the Gospel of Truth. The discovery and translation of the Nag Hammadi library, initially completed in the 1970's, has provided impetus to a major re-evaluation of early Christian history and the nature of Gnosticism.

Ahhh . . . so since it has been imperfectly implemented for the whole of our history we should cease attempting to implement a core, foundational belief as expressed in our founding document . . . is that what you would have us believe HA?

BINGO U WON THE PRIZE....(BOLDED).....ISN'T THAT WHAT TRUMP IS HELL BOUND ON DOING....SHREDDING CORE FOUNDATIONS AND WATCHING THE REACTIONS/RESULTS? HE IS PUSHING THE LIMITS TO TEST IF THERE R ANY LIMITS....IT IS SO BLATANTLY OBVIOUS AND YET THE COLLECTIVE THINKS HE IS MAKING AMERICA GREAT AGAIN....AND WILL DEFEND HIM TO THE GROUND.....I JUST WALK AWAY WITH THE UNDERSTANDING THAT THIS TEST
WILL DEFINE OUR NATION FOR YEARS TO COME.......LET US HOPE WE HAVE THE WISDOM TO STOP THE EXPERIMENT.
Individual charity provided by the federal treasury is not a foundational belief expressed in our founding document HA, nor is monetary support at taxpayer expense in foreign lands for ideological purposes.
Now, if Social Security had an actual foundation that was something other than a federally imposed Ponzi scheme, each successive generation of "investors" wouldn't be needing to contribute an ever higher percentage of an ever increasing income cap to keep it solvent, now would they. Operated as an annuity, with a 65 year term, we could fund the old age needs of our entire population, and end generational poverty, with a simple one time investment of $30k per birth, a total cost to taxpayers per year right now of roughly $120 billion per year instead of the $1.3 trillion that was collected last fiscal year for the fiscally insolvent program the federal government has been running. And the individuals would actually have a personal property right to the money in the annuity, which they absolutely don't have right now, and upon their death their children and heirs would inherit the remaining funds. With what the historical returns have been over the last 65 years, each individual would have a $3 million nest egg for their retirement, that's $6 million for a retired couple. We wouldn't really be needing Medicare then either, now would we, which leaves even more money in the pockets of those who are working to provide food, shelter, and clothing for themselves and their families.
But, that would require putting the people first instead of the government, wouldn't it.
Attempting to cut fraud and waste is not an “experiment”… it’s logical and necessary, which is why your party has never attempted it.
