Nymysys, it seems you totally got pissed at SC for hardly any reason. She was very nice and just said she liked those posts perhaps better than she likes the ones here. That's all. She never said she doesn't like you or wants to ban you (which they don't do). Lighten up for goodness sakes people. Life really is too short for this kind of behavior. Instead of focusing on what our differences are (like politics......like that is so important) let's look at what we have in common with our fellow neighbors instead.

It is the wish of some that all forum members could meet and maybe tip a few. That is foolishness. There are some in the world who are just as abrasive in the flesh as they are in the pixel; maybe more so.

Not totally foolishness. Yes, there are all types of people in this world, and some will be abrasive no matter whether online or in person, and this site is meant to mirror the real world (free speech encouraged). However, it is definitely true that meeting and getting to know other posters better helps tone down the rhetoric quite a bit, and I can state that because it's my own personal experience, as well as conversations relayed to me by others. RT and I are polar opposites in our viewpoints, and there are things he believes that I will never accept, and actually find abhorrent, but in person we have a grand time, laugh a lot, and have found much in common. As a result, we have been more respectful of each other online than we used to be - we still disagree, and test each other, but at least listen to what the other has to say and respond without name calling (except in joking/fun) or being disrespectful.

I take exception to Soulshiner's sentence that "this board has descended into a drunken sh*t throwing match." because I don't see it being that bad (especially coming from 285freetalk when populated by Main Man and RT!) It certainly has room for improvement, and it's going to be a constant on-going effort, mostly by the users to police each other (hence CB's thread to LJ, and now this thread examining Nmysys's behaviors/words), unless we want to go the route of Pinecam (uh, no, forget it!).

Cleaning Up Online Conversation
by Clay Shirky

Here's something you might not have noticed about the internet: Some of the conversations taking place there are less than civil. But dismal online conversations aren't part of the state of nature; everything online takes place in a constructed environment. That means bad discourse isn't a behavior problem, it's a design problem.

All the participants have an incentive to have good conversations, but each participant also has an incentive to get the most attention. This tension suggests that increases in individual anonymity or in group size also increase the likelihood that someone will start acting like a jerk. Both anonymity and scale reduce what Robert Axelrod calls "the shadow of the future"—the sense that our current actions will have consequences down the road. That provides some options for turning the jerk dial down. (See article for more)

In the 1990s, when few businesses really knew what they were doing and the online population was small, putting up a forum that allowed anyone to say anything seemed like a good idea. It wasn't. People aren't naturally well behaved; we're well behaved in environments that reward good behavior and punish bad behavior. Conversation can be incredibly valuable where it works well and terrible where it works badly. We need to structure environments to promote the former and discourage the latter; anyone who wants to get value out of convening many minds has to create and maintain the shadow of the future, or else risk activating the witlessness of crowds.

In my opinion, what we have here may not be the most efficient way to do it, because in not moderating heavily things will get acrimonious and disrespectful quickly and seem they are that way for longer than they really are, but it's the most, for lack of a better term, "organic" way we can interact with one another - we call each other on the crap we pull when it happens, and try our best to moderate ourselves - personal responsibility at its finest!

Suggestions and ideas for how to improve are always welcome - it may not be something that we can implement (like a closed, pre-screened and approved members only forum), but debating them is always worthwhile.

Me too. I think that statement is too harsh.

SC: It certainly has room for improvement, and it's going to be a constant on-going effort, mostly by the users to police each other (hence CB's thread to LJ, and now this thread examining Nmysys's behaviors/words), unless we want to go the route of Pinecam (uh, no, forget it!).

Exactly! Nicely said SC. Once one stops trying to improve then something is wrong. There is nothing wrong with self-examination (keep it clean here folks) and thinking if you yourself can be a better, kinder poster. I hope that is one area I can improve on myself.

What a novel idea asking for suggestions and ideas. Nice.

Here's something you might find interesting.

I don't keep track of who's male or female, because I really don't care. Some are obvious due to usernames, but if the username doesn't explicitly tell me, I assume nothing. I have no idea if you are a man or a woman, I have no idea what your skin color is. To me you are a collection of words on a screen - a thought. If I disagree with that thought, I'll post up and disagree. If you attack, I'll respond in kind.

I think some women might be put off by the responses they get on the internet. In face to face interactions, I treat women differently than men. I was rasied to be a gentleman, and if a woman is rude to me, I just put her in the 'bitch' category, keep my mouth shut and go on with life. But on the internet, if a woman is rude, and I'm not concerned with the sex of the author, they'll get what's coming.

Wow, 2 paragraphs and about 20 "I"s, 10 "i'll"s and a few "I'm"s....I just can't imagine anyone caring that much about what you think NTM...And furthermore just because I'm civil to someone in person doesn't mean I don't think they are an idiot- It just means i don't want to go nose to nose with someone. Nowadays you can get arrested for yelling at people...I know
