I'm glad y'all are sharing your opinions, but can we agree to respectfully disagree? Is it really necessary to call names and belittle those with whom we don't agree? If you really want to go at it, please take it to the Ring! Thank you!
"Now, more than ever, the illusions of division threaten our very existence. We all know the truth: more connects us than separates us. But in times of crisis the wise build bridges, while the foolish build barriers. We must find a way to look after one another as if we were one single tribe.” -King T'Challa, Black Panther

Research shows that children are much more likely than adults to be injured working on the farm
. In Minnesota alone, over 80 children were killed in farming accidents in the past ten years. That's eight kids a year, or nearly one child a month!
...
Why Are Farm Kids At Risk?
Nearly 300 American children are killed in farming accidents each year. Thousands more are injured and maimed. Why are these childhood injuries so common?
One reason is that children on the farm are often expected to do work that they're not mature enough to handle. A 10-year-old may look big and strong enough to run machinery or handle a large animal. But if the tractor tips, or the steer acts up, the child won't have the experience or the skill to stay safe. We'd never expect a 10-year-old to drive a car safely, yet many pre-teens drive the family combine, just because they're big enough to reach the clutch and brake pedals.
A kid who looks big is still a kid, and deserves all the protection that loving adults can provide. One big part of that protection is keeping kids from doing jobs they're simply not mature enough to handle.

She attacks my family, I will come back swinging. Telling me that my parents obviously had bad judgement just because they had us as kids helping out on the farm just to survive and put food on the table. She obviously has NO CLUE about real life and reality!

You are not an American...
You are so F*N stupid
utter lack of any intelligence
All of these insults were hurled by you before AspenValley supposedly attacked your family. BTW - I didn't see her attack your family, she just made a comment about how she hoped you didn't have any kids, which would be a question about your parenting skills, not an attack on your family.
I think you owe AspenValley an apology for your insults.

I didn't attack your family.
I said that just because people did things years ago does not make it smart and putting an eight year old on a tractor is not smart.
My own husband was raised on a farm and did a lot of the things you describe.
But he has said himself more than once that NO WAY NO HOW would he put his own sons at that kind of risk and also has wondered aloud what the hell his parents were thinking.
That's not to say that kids can't help out, on a farm or anywhere. They should and they do. Mine do. But not driving farm tractors at age eight or handling tools or situations beyond their maturity level.
If everyone had common sense and understood that kids shouldn't be pushed into adult responsibilities too young, there wouldn't be so many dead and maimed kids on the farm. But obviously they don't. And since they don't, no, I'm not surprised the government is going to step in and regulate the situation. If people won't regulate themselves, that's what happens.
Go ahead and try to insult me all you want, you seem to enjoy it, but it doesn't affect me in the least. I know where I stand on this issue and I stand on the side of the safety of kids. I'd rather people would look out for their kids on their own but if they won't or don't understand why they must, no, I won't argue that the government shouldn't if their own parents won't.

I don't.
I think it's about whether adults have the right to place their minor children at risk.
I don't care what hazardous thing an adult chooses to do, but I do care when his child is maimed or killed because of what he chooses to do.
I totally agree with you NC. So AV where do you draw the line? Out of 2 million kids living and working on farms there are about 100 deaths per year. ACCIDENTS HAPPEN! If people have kids and decide to build or buy a pool, almost 1000 kids die each year from drowning, should we ban pools or send them to jail? Almost 10,000 die in car accidents and as a parent you let them get a license and drive and probably got them their car too. Jail time for you? And falls claim more than the 100 lost on farms each year. Jail for having stairs? And poisonings? Hundreds of them each year. You bought the bleach or whatever it was. Jail for them too? All of these cause more deaths than farming accidents. And this would bring small farming to an end and raise the prices on all of our food. People like you and the others on here defending this are dangerous to our naiton. Almost worse than terrorists. At least they just hit you once and normally tke themselves out with it. You want to keep terrorizing this country and destroying it from within. Many of our Founding Fathers predicted there would be people like you!
