20,000 Heat-Seeking Missiles Reportedly Feared Missing From Libyan Warehouse

A recent secret White House meeting revealed that an estimated 20,000 portable, heat-seeking missiles appear to have vanished from an Army warehouse in Libya, ABCNews.com reported.

The new revelations stoke ongoing fears that such weapons, which are light, relatively easy to use and have the capacity to take down a commercial airplane, could end up in the wrong hands as the Libyan war that ousted Muammar Qaddafi winds down.

“Matching up a terrorist with a shoulder-fired missile, that's our worst nightmare,” Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., told ABCNews.com.

rofllol To think it was safer for Krazy Kadaffi to have all these portable SAM's than the Libyan freedom fighters.

I'm confused. How has the war come back to bite us? How is this President Obama's fault? According to the story, these were supposedly stolen from an U.S. Army warehouse, so wouldn't it be the fault of those guarding the weapons?

First, we aren't in there. From what I remember, this is an air campaign only. Second, the UN is in charge and this is a multi-nation effort.

20,000 missles are missing and you are blaming the President for them being stolen? You think that they were stolen because of the U.S. presence in the air campaign on Libya?

I think they were stolen because some idiot who doesn't understand foreign policy or the mentality of these people was stupid enough to get us involved in there in the first place. Secondly I think the U.N. is the MOST CORRUPT ANTI-AMERICAN organization in this world.

By the way, it was not a U.N. operation, it was a NATO operation supposedly. If you are going to argue, please know what you are talking about.

They would have gone missing without the U.S. joining in the operation.

A second fact is, they were under the control of Kadaffi in the first place -- and he's a known terrorist.

The final fact: the Lockerbie terrorist bombing didn't use missiles, so it can't be "another Lockerbie."

You might want to go back and read the article again, there are no US Army warehouses in Libya and the story also says that the US had people on the ground to assist the TNC with securing weapons. So let's see, Barry said no boots on the ground but there are US DoD personnel in Libya assessing what it will take to rebuild the US embassy. Now it turns out there are additional US personnel assisting the TNC with their weapons proliferation problem. I can't help but wonder how many other US personnel are in Libya despite being told by the current CIC that no US troops will be sent to Libya...

20,000 or so shoulder fired missiles in the hands of terrorists? That's a very big problem and even Barbie Boxer recognizes that (so the scale of the issue is enormous enough that even a Democrat acknowledged the issue). Terrorists, no matter who or what they hate, now potentially have a chance to get their hands on some of the key tools of the trade. Since the support on the ground was supposed to be lead by NATO instead of the US, why are there US personnel in Libya? Why didn't NATO forecast this problem? Why are we being lied to by the current President of the United States?

I can explain it to you but I can't understand it for you.

Perhaps you should know what you are talking about..

On March 19, 2011 a multi-state coalition began a military intervention in Libya to implement United Nations Security Council Resolution 1973, which was taken in response to events during the 2011 Libyan civil war.

NATO took control of the arms embargo after that and agreed to take control of the no-fly zone.
