Let me get this straight.... Progressives who vilify and fight against any reference to Halloween, Christmas, Valentine’s Day, or the Ten Commandments, in school think it’s fine for a Muslim prayer to be sung in a public school? And no progressives, here sees the hypocrisy in this?

Ok.....so what ever a progressive does you can do better? or worse? I do so love the "you do it too" defense of bad behavior. Who knew conservatives looked to liberals to set their behavior standards.

Just making a point.

So, what's the point?

Progressives who vilify and fight against any reference to Halloween, Christmas, Valentine’s Day, or the Ten Commandments, in school think it’s fine for a Muslim prayer to be sung in a public school?

Just for clarification where does it say there were prayers of any other religion to be sung at this school

Why would that be, I would think at his age and being a Senior he is able to make some of his own choices. I did the same for my kids. When they wer juniors and seniors I wanted them to decide things, I was there to help but not decide for them.

So your point was that "you do it too"......you forgot to add "neener neener".

I wasn't aware that anyone said that there were other religious prayers sung at this school.....only that school choirs are known to sing many religious songs including Christian. If you can sing Christian songs do you think it's OK for a choir to sing songs from other religions? Can you answer that question or are you going to stick to the "you do it too, whatever it is".

And what religious choices did you make for them before they were juniors and seniors? Did you make them attend church until you decided that they could make up their own minds?

No sure did not, figured once they were old enough that would be thier decision not mind. Even today we do not really talk religious. That is a personal issue.

Leonard Bernstein would disagree with Master Harper.
To support my argument, I am providing a video link of Bernstein (a Jew) -
conducting the finale of Mahler's Resurrection Symphony (number 2).

To add to the complexity - I'd also note that Mahler was a Jew, who converted to the
Catholic faith. The symphony is unquestionably thick with Christian theology - which Bernstein likely would not agree with. Nonetheless - he conducted --- and did a stellar job of it.

That's what I think people should do
do what's asked of you --- do it well --- and thank your God for the opportunity to do it.

The cool thing is that with 7 pages over a kid singing or not singing a song....there must really be no major issues to resolve right now.

Singing....who cares?

Let him sing, let him drive to school, let him buy lunch, let him sit it out. This is not news, if it was, I would have made news 1/week in hs. All kids just perpetuate their parents culture, this is done usually with little thought....this is why most christians end up with christian children, not because Christianity is the way, just because the kids copy the parents, been going on for generations, though some people convert on their own, rarely as kids. If his family culture is not Mulsim songs, then so be it.

I am curious though, when it comes to school songs/chants....which god are they talking about in the Federal Pledge? Do people know what devout Muslim kids' do during the pledge, do they sub in allah or to they presume the god written is allah?

Interesting that there is a Christian song scheduled to be sung and no one on this topic mentioned it. Also interesting that before the final selections, according to the article, the choir director let the students review the selections to see if anyone had a problem with any of them. Sounds like this kid didn't speak up until AFTER the selections were made. So, why did he keep his big mouth shut during the review?

As LJ says, just another bigot stirring up trouble.

A devout Muslim does not have to recite the pledge...

Many United States Supreme Court cases involving Jehovah's Witnesses have shaped First Amendment law. Significant cases affirmed rights such as these:

Right to Refrain from Compulsory Flag Salute - West Virginia State Board of Education vs. Barnette

Conscientious objection to military service

Preaching in public

By 1988, the U.S. Supreme Court had reviewed 71 cases involving Jehovah's Witnesses as an organization, two-thirds of which were decided in their favor. In 2002, the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society disputed an ordinance in Stratton, Ohio that required a permit in order to preach from door to door. The Supreme Court decided in favor of the Witnesses.[11]

The flag salute case was decided in 1943.
