Colorado student quits high school choir over Islamic song

A Colorado high school student says he quit the school choir after an Islamic song containing the lyric "there is no truth except Allah" made it into the repertoire.

James Harper, a senior at Grand Junction High School in Grand Junction, put his objection to singing "Zikr," a song written by Indian composer A.R. Rahman, in an email to Mesa County School District 51 officials. When the school stood by choir director Marcia Wieland's selection, Harper said, he quit.

Sounds like the kid is pretty intolerant to me. Allah is God. Or he is an attention whore.

Good for the Kid, he has balls, what most people don't.

plenty of choir music is distinctively Christian - and plenty of people who don't really consider themselves Christian sing those songs.

(listen to Ave Maria, for goodness sake ---- maybe I should refuse to sing it since I'm not Catholic!)

For the most part, we sing music because it's beautiful - not because we particularly agree with the views of the music's composer.

Personally I wouldn't have any trouble signing a song from another religion. It is just signing a song, not making an endorsement.

You can probably thank his parents for sticking him with such an intolerant attitude...

Or maybe the kid just found the perfect excuse for quitting choir? They were willing to let him skip these performances.
