"PARIS — French Socialist Francois Hollande appeared headed to victory over President Nicolas Sarkozy, according to exit polls of voters released by Swiss and Belgian news media.
Those polls showed Hollande with 52 to 53 percent of the vote in an election that turned on solutions for Europe's economic crisis amid record unemployment in France."

That's not too much change. Evidently you don't understand French politics... conservative and left in France is not that terribly far apart. Sarkozy's Union for a Popular Movement is much further left than even our Dino Democrat members. A simple example of that point. Have you ever heard Sarkory and his party campaign against France's socialized health care system? Of course not. Over all the French pay as much as 48 percent in taxes... under Sarkozy. A move a little more to the left in France is like stepping off the side walk but not quite stepping head on into traffic.
What is really good news is the neo-nazi and extreme nationalist Mademoiselle Le Pen didn't garner much of the vote at all.

Or at least stop the austerity b.s. that's killing your country...
Right... this will be good?
If elected, Hollande will inevitably push for tougher financial regulation in France and on the continent, and unlike his predecessor, will most likely see them through. This will invariably impact and eventually restrict the way Wall Street and the City of London does business, both on the continent and, quite possibly, at home. And if he pushes hard enough, he could disturb the carefully crafted agreement with the European Central Bank that is keeping the euro on life support, setting off a chain of events that could have dire worldwide economic consequences.
This will be interesting. he did promise to "balance the budget within 5 years" and that will continue to take cuts and tax hikes alike. What I find interesting about the whole EU, is that the reason it was formed in teh beginning was to make sure that Germany couldn't pull off another take over attempt (ala Hitler) and basically force Europe to "get along" and now with the mess they are in, Germany continues to lead the way out. Either case, Germany seems to be in charge. I wonder how Angela and Francois will get on?
I know that the people are tired of austerity, but they need to be careful who they put in charge. I think that a good balance of stimulus and cutbacks are a better path than only cutbacks.
We need Europe to be successful. Our economy depends on it. I know that efforts have been made by the US, over the last year or so, to open up trading in Asia and S America in anticipation of this mess. Let's hope it works.
I agree, If they are the only ones playing by the rules and everyone expects them to come to the rescue, it is not fair. And that is what gets everyone upset - the unfairness.
It is too early to tell and a lot depends on other factors, but what does this mean for USA? Asian stocks plunged and more than likely DOW et al will tomorrow. But for the long term, if Europe is in chaos and not buying goods, is Asia and South America going to pick up the slack as Wily suggested.
Or are we rapidly going over the cliff rather than moving at a slower pace hoping that things will turn around?
