Yeah, it's worked so well in England that the Conservatives just got their bums handed to them in the latest election... France, England, Greece...and ultimately, Germany, whether they like it or not...are going to have to raise revenues. (And the U.S. too...) Go sell Ayn Rand to the crazies...We're all full up here...

"I am reading Krugman this morning and he still insists he is right and that there needs to be more stimulus. And so many people still believe this. I fall over in disbelief."

Well I see what's going on in Europe as a reflection of what's going on right here in the US. Finally though we may get a peek at which form of economics works. Should we approach it through austerity as has been marginally successful in Europe? Should we go on a spending binge like some drunken sailors (you can guess who espouses this)? Or is the answer somewhere in between?

I'm also very curious to see how the wealthy of France react to a 75% tax rate for income over $1.3 million. Will they work twice as hard to pay more taxes or will they take a "vacation" when they hit the $1.3 million mark? While they are on "vacation" what will the common people who work for them be doing? Can they take a vacation? One can only hope.

This new French leader is going to shake up the status quo in Europe. He wasn't elected to be Melba Milktoast. Make some popcorn because I think this is about the get very interesting. Bring it on. Talk is cheap and we will soon know how this plays out...perhaps just in time for our November elections.

The "far left" candidate took a sizable slice of the vote away from Sarkozy...

He was the candidate representing the Left Front (Communist Party of France, Left Party, Unitarian Left) in the 2012 French presidential election.[5][6] He took fourth place and achieved 11.05% of the vote, trailing behind François Hollande, Nicolas Sarkozy, and Marine Le Pen and their respective parties, the Socialist Party, Union for a Popular Movement, and National Front. For comparison, the frontrunner François Hollande received 28.63% of the vote.[7]

Jean-Luc Mélenchon proposed a 100 percent tax rate

About 11 percent of voters chose Jean-Luc Melenchon, whose popularity rocketed in recent weeks on a promise to impose 100 percent income taxes on anyone earning more than 350,000 euros (about $469,000) a year.

I would expect that people would get pissed- especially in socialist Europe- when you take away the candy from the baby- the baby starts to cry.

I would not classify the austarity in europe to be "marginally sucessful"- they are on a hard diet of government cuts- exactly what the doctor ordered. It will work- it will work faster than any other way- but if they stop the anti-biotic treatment before the infection is gone, it'll mean more hard times ahead- and even harder times ahead.

And LJ- if we had listened to Ayn Rand in the first place- none of these countries would be in this shape to begin with. It's these very dangerous socialist policies and ideas that have created this mess. She warned us all about these bad ideas 50 years ago.

Would you propose a 100 percent tax rate on incomes of a certain level?

Luckily, you can find eleven percent of any given population who will believe lunacy. Not that your standard French politicos are much better. Sarkozy was pretty much the cream of the crop.

For all of you out there who trust the government- you will wind up being very sorry you did. Those are the last people I would trust.
