You have no idea LJ- you and the other libs on here today. My mothers side of the family comes from europe- not a single one of them would go back today- they simply have made a better life for themselves here.
You think I'm just another right wing hillbilly- well maybe so but I'm also very well cultured in American and European cultures. Not a single one of my uncles would advocate for socialism- they have seen it first hand. You have no idea how they had to struggle- came here with nothing and built lives for their families - all due to the opportunities they found when they got to America.

I don't know a single liberal who wants the USA to look like France, or Germany, or any other nation other than the USA.......but we are not so blind, or stupid, as to think that our beloved country cannot be improved upon, and should be protected from predators like the Tea Party and the ultra right-wing Republicans. We love her to much to let that happen without a fight.

Don't say you were not warned- because all of you who think the government is going to take care of you are going to experience what my european family members already know- that you are much better off taking care of yourself- than to depend on government to take care of you.
I really think that most of the liberals on here have just failed to secure their own future- that's why you want the government to take care of you. You may be just lazy- or failures in life.

Personally, I know that when I mention 'socialism' when debating liberal/conservative issues, it's because that where I see the liberal agenda leading. I don't see any liberals here saying "Let's elect socialists and turn all methods of production over to the government", but I see the current helathcare reform and the desired single payer system to be a step in that direction.
It's kinda like saying that a northbound ocean liner is turning east - It doesn't happen all at once, just degree by degree.

And......you would be wrong, as per usual. I don't want the government to take care of me, I am retired and planned well for that retirement, which, of course, includes paying into SS and Medicare all those working years, those benefits help, but are hardly my sole retirement.
What I find so funny in light of your post are the many seniors I know in AZ who survive primarily on SS and Medicare, without it they would be in a poor house.....and they are not liberals, they are conservatives just like you.....In spite of their situation I would not consider them lazy, or failures in life (except perhaps for their choice of which political party they support). We have had this exact discussion.......and when faced with the new GOP platform of austerity fueled by cuts to SS and Medicare they are perfect little conservatives. Medicare and SS were never intended to provide a retirement. The system was never intended to be that - not from the start. The fact is that we can not afford it to be a retirement either.
These systems were created by lefties to be a social net- not to be a sole source of retirement. They were intended to suppliment one's own retirement savings.
It may not even be able to just suppliment- the programs are broke. Every American is responsible for their own retirement- and if you have failed so miserably that you depend only on those programs- then I have little sympathy for your plight.
Your responsibility during your working years was to save for your elderly years- dont give me any excuse otherwise- if you didn't save then it's on you, don't blame me.
Many of those senior's in AZ are foolin you Archer- they may be living on SS- but I'd bet that many of them have a tidy little stash that they are not telling you about. That's how it is for most of the older folks I know- they may hold their budgets to what they get from SS- but they also have other money.
And if they don't- it's not my fault. I'm saving so I'll have a better retirement than what the government gives me.
At the same time I'm paying for the SS checks that those who failed to save- or were too lazy to save- or otherwise just didn't get the job done.
Everyone has a responsibility to save for their own retirement- it's irresponsible to be only a burden on society.
