Personally, I don't think an online forum where people can be anonymous lends itself to the sort of discussions you wish for. I also think those sorts of discussions are boring to read. If I want intelligent political discussions, I'll wait for in-person give and takes with real people with real identities. The anonymous lax moderation scenario lends itself to trolls popping in and derailing any meaningful discussions. I also think many on here like to put people in pre-defined boxes and go from there.

I could be wrong. I frequently am.

I've checked out other forums and I think it can happen. (Did you see my last post in the The Stupid Things You Do Online (and How to Fix Them) thread about an analysis of Internet discussion groups with anonymous users finding that "the tone of online discussions was positive or neutral 85% of the time"?) I have a hunch that this forum, and the political portion of this site in particular, just has a hurdle to push through of people who became familiar with how things were run elsewhere in this community, and unprofessional treatment by some of those who run it, that cause them to post the way they do now based on previous expectations/habit, compounded with an exciting realization that they won't get suspended or banned just for posting "baiting and insulting" remarks here. If you go to brand new forums in communities that didn't have online forums before, you get vastly differing spectrum of behaviors and they aren't all automatically negative. The personal-ness of posts, and familiarity of many regulars here with each other definitely do make it more fun as straight-up, issues-only posts would be dry and boring, but there's a line between being personal and questioning, and being judgmental and mean. Trolls can be dealt with, both by the members themselves and by the moderators, and the Ignore/Foe function serves its purpose very well for that - if they realize that they don't get the attention they want, and their efforts to disrupt a forum won't work, they move on to easier pickings.

Putting people in pre-defined boxes is simple human nature, prevalent everywhere, because it's easier. It takes patience, effort, curiosity, and a willingness to listen and remain open-minded to find out that that new person you are talking to is unique and believes a blended spectrum of things due to their life experiences and that's a whole lot harder to do (but more fun if you accept the challenge!).

"Now, more than ever, the illusions of division threaten our very existence. We all know the truth: more connects us than separates us. But in times of crisis the wise build bridges, while the foolish build barriers. We must find a way to look after one another as if we were one single tribe.” -King T'Challa, Black Panther

The truth is incontrovertible. Malice may attack it. ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is. ~Winston Churchill

There are only two boxes. I'm standing in one of them. It's labelled "Right". Everyone else is in the other box. It's labelled "Wrong".

It's nice to keep it simple :)

Posting anonymously is not an issue that is why you have moderators. You get truth out of people when they don't have to worry about retaliation. That is why privacy is so important, in my view. That is the whole point of Communities Bound compared to Facebook. Personally, I have been posting more than I usually do because of the election and conventions. Have you been to other forums where you have to wade through the trolls because they cannot keep a handle on it or they pull your posts? I won't post on a board where they decide what I can say or how to say it. 285bound blows PC out of the water (took over the political discussion in this area) on the political forums because no one wants to have to "be nice" or say what they want them to say or have their posts pulled.

I don't have fun on boards that are all one party or the other and I have been posting here lately for fun. In fact, I have work to do and have been on here more than I should be. It is a bit addictive. It's all good.

My take.

I agree 100%. But you know SC, it's just like going to a party where one guy takes a dump in the punch bowl. I've tried over the years to have civil constructive debates in the courthouse (kinda like what is allowed in an actual courthouse) but have been told by both sides that it's just not possible. It is possible for me, but I've accepted this atmosphere of name calling and blanket generalizations. Don't ask me why I stick around... I can't explain that any other way than Einstien's definition of insanity.

You must notice that we rarely ever get any new voices in here right? I mean, how many members do you have total and how many those are willing to jump into the mudpit? The Ring is a great idea but comments worthy of the ring stay here for the most part. You don't have to have a heavily moderated site, but you could easliy have one little section for people who want to discuss the issues and the mudslingers could get flushed with one click of your mouse. JMO.

The left is angry because they are now being judged by the content of their character and not by the color of their skin.

Yes... I know it was supposed to be a joke... But like all of your usual attempts at "humor", it wasn't humor, it was snark...And I responded appropriately.

Easy way to fix it... Only respond to posts that appeal to you and don't respond on the ones you feel are not going to discuss.

snark isn't funny? Dang I wish they'd quit changing the rules without sending out memos first.

I do. I also don't believe in the ignore feature. If I'm having a discussion with a group of people, i want to know what they are saying in response to my comments (you know, like the real world). If you want new people to join serious discussions, you won't get any when the first thing they see is "teabaggin neo-nazi nuckledragger!" That stuff should have been worn out by high school, yet it's the norm around here. I think if there was just one section where local and national politics could be discussed without the overgrown children, you would see some fresh opinions from people with different perspectives.

But again, I've accepted what this place is and I'm rollling with it.

What I notice is that there are several left wing crazies in here, quite a few liberal republicans, and very very few actual conservatives.

There's not much to debate- do any of you moderates think you can turn LJ into a real American?

Ha!

This forum is useful for each of us to express our opinion- and that's about it. I agree with very few of the posters in here- maybe Printsmith and a few others.

It's compromise that got this country into the mess we are in now- bipartisanship got us in this trouble. You can have a country that believes in free market values- or you can have a socialist country.

There's no havin it both ways. The two ideologies are in direct conflict with another. Liberals will fight until the last rich guy is broke, the last business- out of business, because they had to share their prosperity with all the losers.

Real conseravtives will fight for the founding principles of this country- for free markets- for limited government. Clinton was right when he said- conservatives want a winner take all society. That's a blunt way to put it, and the other side of that coin is that liberals want a collectivist society- where the natural losers get a share of the winners stuff.

Which is the way of the real world, and which is a fantasy? Trying to be all things to all people is destroying this country.

You are so far off the rails there's no bringing you back... But enjoy your delusion...

If you are the "example" of what constitutes a "real American"...then you're right... I don't want to be one. I never could get that goose-stepping thing down.
