The alternate route actually goes east, avoids many major aquifers, and stays on Canadian soil.

This article goes to an earlier post regarding profits from the pipeline:

Bottom line? Koch Industries does stand to benefit from building the pipeline. However, the profits some are extrapolating for the Koch Brothers is rated "pants on fire".

Now, I wonder what Buffet's profits might be rated by an organization like this if the pipeline is not built? Anyone?

I have heard of two routes being looked at, one to go to the Great Lakes, and another through the Canadian Rockies to Vancouver. The Great Lakes would only be a seasonal route and ends up far away from China's energy consumers. If US politicians permitted US oil to be exported, Alaska could be providing petrol to Asia instead of the prairie provinces.

It will also be used as a fish ladder for wild trout and a fun slide for wild Canadiens.

Desperate GOP Spotted In South Dakota Trying To Build Keystone Pipeline Themselves

"RAPID CITY, SD—Excavating hundreds of miles of trench following the defeat of a Senate bill that would have approved the project, dozens of desperate GOP congressmen were reportedly spotted in rural South Dakota Thursday trying to build the Keystone XL pipeline system themselves. “We really don’t have any other choice at the moment, so we’re going to build the best pipeline we can using our own two hands,” said Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY).... “Sometimes if you want to transport 830,000 barrels of crude oil a day from Canada to Nebraska, you just have to roll up your sleeves and do it yourself.”

I've hesitated to share this because the issue the OP put forward was in regard to gas prices in Colorado. I believe, however, the issue of building the Pipeline goes far, far beyond this limited view.

While mining companies are supposedly "required to reclaim" lands affected by their activities, the damages they do sometimes cannot be restored to previous levels. Witness the clear cutting of the Boreal forests in preparation for the strip mining, itself.

These photos tell the story, and clearly illustrate why alternative forms of energy need to be explored more in depth, in my opinion.
