While I agree they should have evacuated, they may not have been able to get out. If the embers were already falling or the exit route was blocked it may have been too late to evacuate and they opted to shelter in place. I hope they're found and they're okay.
Just a tip for those who listen to those scanner feeds - if you use Winamp to listen, you can see the Alpha tags. You can not see the Alpha tags using the web player.
The Alpha tags show the frequency and or the digital talkgroups along with a description of what agency you are listening to. Not all feeds are broadcasting the Alpha tags - the Mountain Area feed does broadcast them.

Hey, I lived through them too and guess what? I did'nt evacuate. I stood my ground, and when I was awaken by Tsunami sirens at 4am on a pitch black Hawaiin beach in Febuary...I stayed right there too. I don't run- I like to meet life head on

Well, we went up to our Penthouse Suite on the 9th floor, but we were the only people left in the building, and there had to be 1000 people staying in that complex.... the entire town evacuated, my wife cried, a helicopter came up to our balcony and told us to flee to higher ground, but I wouldn't leave..The date is off in these pics, I set it wrong, but you know the tsunami was this year
