Public lands, roads and so forth aren't socialism. They are mutually beneficial, just controlled by a wasteful government that no longer respects the wishes of the people that put them in a position to oversee these resources for all of us.

I see... So, archer was right:

archer wrote: so...let me get this right...."socialism" by your definition, is good as long as it benefits you, and bad if it benefits someone else? Got it.

It still isn't socialism.

Another attempt at equating socialism with charity Photo-fish, one is mandated and one voluntarily done.

For the weak minded left, this is an open forum, not an example of socialism.

So we have two systems, one which seeks to ally society and one which pursues the accumulation of wealth. I'd consider both systems admirable as long as one doesn't infringe on the other. Striking a balance between the two would lead to a healthy society where hard work is rewarded and all the members work together for mutual success. Unbridled socialism would result in the weakest members dragging down the rest, unbridled capitalism in the strongest seizing all assets for themselves.

Our society (socialism) has built a system where all citizens share certain wealth in common. Our roads, our air, our water, our military, our schools, our waterways, our public safety departments (just to name a few) When we privatize our common wealths it rarely ends well- look at the result of privatizing our monetary system- our airwaves.

ckm8, earlier in this country we formed co ops. They were a way to mutually benefit from increased buying potential, etc. and now we want Uncle Sam to take care of us from birth to the grave, not even remotely the same thing. Some people are destined to be burdens to society due to things outside their control. This is where family, friends and charitable organizations become so important. We have a situation where our welfare system causes people to benefit by being continuous burdens even when they could do so much more themselves. Welfare was supposed to be a temporary relative short term benefit to allow people to once again become productive.

Another one from the lefty playbook, P-f. Don't try to argue Christianity if you don't believe in it. Most churches, of all faiths, produce tremendous amounts of money, volunteers and benefit those in need both inside and outside this nation. The government in its ever thirsty need for more dollars to squander, simply sees welfare as another slice of the pie for them.

Roads, bridges, cops, fire depts are for the common good. Would not a healthy population also be beneficial?

See where this is going? It's all good socialism, baby, it just depends on how far you wanna go. (imagine that sentence in an Isaac Hayes voice.)
