On one of the tv stations, he said bill might pass the house but since it was close to the end of the session it might get bottled up and not approved. So maybe only a token gesture. Would be interested in what the Governor would do if it made it to his desk.

Nothing we can do now can bring back the lost lives, property, etc. But I believe we can do more than has been done to date to help the victims. How to best do that at this point I do not know, but I think that open discussion is good.

Good question jf. Some are still in shell shock or working through the stages of loss and can't yet fathom where to begin. I do know a number of government entities have made people available to talk with homeowners about permits, erosion control, septics, etc. so they are getting an understanding of the hurdles they have to jump. For some it makes it more overwhelming for others it provides a place to begin. The most daunting is insurance and they are only in the beginning stages.

The homeowner I worked with moved quickly mostly because he had kids and wanted to get them back into a regular routine. While the kids were sad about their losses, the parents made it an adventure for the kids finding a new temporary place with all new (to them) stuff. And they get to take care of their animals even though they are in a different location for the time being. Their teachers are aware of the circumstances.

They all react differently. Not unusual to see happiness one minute and sheer rage or tears the next.

With the homeowners that I have met, most have a really good support system. People who are willing to do something now or later whenever they are ready.

So the whole point of this is to say that the homeowners will pretty much have to tell us when they are ready.

Maybe you weren't referencing that type of assistance but maybe some other way to help?

I was looking for any/all suggestions for ways to help, both now and as recovery proceeds. Many people are limited in ability to help financially or physically, but may be able to help in other ways if the needs/opportunities are known.

The AG's office said the bill violates the state constitution. A provision in the constitution prohibits the General Assembly from passing a law "granting to any . . . individual any special or exclusive privilege, immunity, or franchise whatever," and commands that "where a general law can be made applicable, no special law shall be enacted."

What an anazing passage from Kristin Moeller's blog

Miraculously, grass is growing on the land bringing some color and life to the moonscape. It is fitting to think about living there again. Like us, it is scorched, edgy, raw, tired, and wounded and yet the will to transform is evident. The invitation is to walk through this together. The dark sooty ground, mangled trees and scorched rocks will normalize our pain. The delicate clumps of green grass will remind us of the regenerative power of nature.

The world will go on, yet we will heal gradually with the land. We don’t have to rush our process. It will take decades for the land to truly heal. It will be patient with us and we will be patient with it. When the world seems to forget our pain, we will be comforted to know the land hasn’t forgotten. Eventually our scars will mend and something new will arise. We can’t know what it will look like yet. We can’t know who we will be yet. We will discover who we will become together. Every season we will morph and change, yet our hard-earned raw beauty will remain, always a reminder of the power of fire to transform.

Someone some where on this site said a long time ago that it will be a vote of the people. Collecting ballot signatures should be fun.
