Open Our Eyes

Today's Scripture

As they sat down to eat, he took the bread and blessed it. Then he broke it and gave it to them. Suddenly, their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. Luke 24:30–31, NLT

Two days after Jesus was crucified and buried, two of His discouraged, heartbroken disciples were walking the seven-mile journey from Jerusalem to Emmaus when they were joined by a man they didn’t recognize. They were so focused on their great loss that they didn’t recognize the miracle of the moment, that they were walking with the risen Jesus. They were missing the joy in the journey. They didn’t see it until God suddenly opened their eyes and they recognized they had been in His presence the whole time.

We see the difficulties and struggles every day, but are we seeing the joy in the journey? Could it be that God is doing great things, that we’re actually in a great moment right now, but we don’t see the good things? My prayer is, “God, open our eyes as You did for those two disciples.” There are great things happening right now—great memories to be made, great people to enjoy, great opportunities coming. Don’t be so busy and stressed trying to get where you want to go that you miss it.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You that no matter where I go or what I do or what I’m feeling, You are always with me. Open my eyes to see You today and to recognize the great things You have gifted to me. I want to walk with Jesus today and find joy in my journey. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

Live Your Purpose

Today's Scripture

“Now when David had served God’s purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep.” Acts 13:36, NIV

Many people today are not being true to who they are because they’re afraid they may disappoint someone, fall out of their good graces, or not be accepted. But you can’t live the life God wants for you, the life He purposed for you, if you are trying to be who your parents, who your friends, or who your boss wants you to be. You have to be true to who God made you to be.

After all, God doesn’t want you to be an imitation of someone else. You should be the original you were created to be. There is an anointing on your life, an empowerment, not to be somebody else, but to be you. If you let people squeeze you into their mold and you bow down to their pressure to try to please your critics, it not only takes away your uniqueness, but it also lessens the favor on your life. It’s time for you to go out and fulfill your purpose for your generation, run your own race, and to be free to be who you really are.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You that I can seek Your kingdom first and be who You want me to be. Help me to run my own race with passion. I believe that Your anointing and empowerment and favor will rest upon my life so that I can fulfill Your purpose for me in my generation. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

What Do You See?

Today's Scripture

The word of the LORD came to me: “What do you see, Jeremiah?” Jeremiah 1:11, NIV

God promised Jeremiah an amazing future, that he would speak to and impact nations, but Jeremiah made excuses that he couldn’t possibly do that. Doubt, fear, and insecurity clouded his vision. God touched his lips and said, “Don’t worry. I will put My words in your mouth.” God will never ask you to do something and not give you the ability to do it. Then He asked Jeremiah, “What do you see?” Jeremiah answered, “I see the branch of an almond tree starting to bud and blossom.” He was saying, in effect, “I see growth. I see new opportunities. I see me stepping into new levels.” Because his vision cleared, he went on to impact nations, to blossom just as God said.

God is asking you, “What do you see?” He has given you amazing promises in His Word, but maybe your vision has been limited by disappointments, setbacks, and doubts. Open your eyes to a new, fresh vision; clear out all the negative, limited thinking, and see yourself blessed, prosperous, healthy, achieving goals, building the kingdom, being a blessing. See yourself as God sees you.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You that Your plan for my life is that I am always in blossom, making an impact and being a blessing. Thank You that I can fill my mind with Your Word and know Your thoughts toward me. I believe my vision is clearing and expanding for greater things. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

Angels at Work

Today's Scripture

So Peter left the cell, following the angel. But all the time he thought it was a dream or vision and didn’t believe it was really happening. Acts 12:9, TLB

King Herod had Peter chained between two guards in the deepest part of the prison, but in the middle of the night an angel came to rescue him. What’s interesting is that the whole time Peter was following the angel, he thought he was seeing a vision of himself walking past two guard posts and the iron gate opening by itself. He didn’t realize it was real until he got out on the street, walking as a free man.

Sometimes you don’t realize that God is doing things that are leading you to open doors. It’s only after you get past it that you’ll look back and think, “Wow, God! You were ordering my steps, bringing the right person to help, and making me invisible to the people who weren’t for me.” How many times have angels worked on our behalf, but we couldn’t see it? Even now, God is working behind the scenes and is about to open doors of healing, freedom, and abundance for you. It looks like an iron gate, but of its own accord, it’s going to open.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You that no matter what trouble I face, I can stay in peace knowing that You are surrounding me and You can turn every situation around and put an end to it. Thank You that You even send angels in various forms to rescue me. I declare that You are greater than any force that comes against me. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

The Secret to a Changed Life

Today's Scripture

When Jesus came by, he looked up at Zacchaeus and called him by name. “Zacchaeus!” he said. “Quick, come down! I must be a guest in your home today.” Luke 19:5, NLT

Zacchaeus was the despised chief tax collector in the region, known for cheating people and called a notorious sinner. Yet when Jesus could have spent time with any of the local religious leaders, He chose Zacchaeus, which they found disgusting. Religion says, “He’s too bad. He’s scum. Stay away.” Sometimes religion portrays an image of God where you can’t measure up, and it uses guilt and your feelings of unworthiness to try to get you to live right. But God says, “I gladly welcome Zacchaeus. What he has done does not cancel out My mercy.”

When Zacchaeus came to understand that God loved him unconditionally, even when he had made mistakes, he decided to change his ways and salvation came to him. Sometimes we think that if we tell people all they’re doing wrong and make them feel guilty, they’ll change. But condemnation doesn’t make them do better. It is when they hear about a God who shows mercy when they deserve judgment that they’ll change. The Scripture says, “It’s the goodness of God that leads to repentance.”

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You that even though You know everything about me, You still invite Yourself to come to my house for dinner and bring the gift of salvation. Thank You that it’s not about my performance, about being good enough, about being worthy, but it’s about Your love. Welcome to my house. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

Take a Look Inside

Today's Scripture

Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. Proverbs 4:23, NIV

One of our main responsibilities is to keep negative emotions and attitudes out of our heart. You can’t stop offenses, disappointments, hurts, jealousy, or anger from coming. But are you going to let those negatives take root, get down in your spirit, contaminate your joy, take your energy, and open you up to sickness and defeat? No, keep your soul healthy. The Scripture says to make sure “that no root of bitterness springs up and many become defiled.” Pull up the roots of unforgiveness, insecurity, guilt, and condemnation. Don’t let your soul become poisoned. If your soul is bitter, if your emotional well-being is contaminated, it’s going to affect your physical health as well.

Today, I’m asking you to look inside. Are you positive, hopeful, and grateful, or are you weighed down with stress, burdens, and worry? It’s time to get your soul healthy. Don’t just try to deal with the symptoms. Pull up the bitter roots. Start turning things over to God. Release the worry, the hurt, and what didn’t work out. Live from a place of trust and keep guarding your heart.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You that I can guard my heart and keep it free from all the negative emotions and attitudes that try to enter in and take root. I declare that I will stay aware and pull up any roots before they can grow. I want both a healthy soul as well as a healthy body. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

Stay on the Walls

Today's Scripture

When Sanballat heard that we were rebuilding the wall, he became angry and was greatly incensed. He ridiculed the Jews, and…said, “What are those feeble Jews doing?...Can they bring the stones back to life from those heaps of rubble—burned as they are?” Nehemiah 4:1–2, NIV

Nehemiah was courageously leading the effort to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem and restore safety to its inhabitants when two men, Sanballat and Tobiah, opposed him. They started stirring up trouble, spreading rumors about Nehemiah’s motives, making false accusations, and gathering other enemies to stop the work. But however much Nehemiah was tempted to straighten them out, he refused to be baited into conflict and kept working, completing the walls in record time. He put his reputation and purpose in God’s hands and focused on what he was called to do.

It’s no different today. Anytime you step up to do the right thing, don’t be surprised if someone finds fault, questions your motives, and says things that are not true. If you were sitting around being mediocre, no one would care. The fact that people are trying to discredit you, trying to make you look bad, that’s a sign that you’re doing something right, you’re making a difference, you’re leaving your mark. You keep doing the right thing, and God will take care of Sanballat and Tobiah.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You that You have given me walls to rebuild and a purpose to fulfill. Give me wisdom to know when what is coming against me is simply a distraction that will get me off course. I believe that You are my defender and will fight those battles for me. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

God-Sized Prayers

Today's Scripture

“You, my God, have revealed to your servant that you will build a house for him. So your servant has found courage to pray to you.” 1 Chronicles 17:25, NIV

In 1 Chronicles 17, God gave David the amazing promise that one of his descendants would always be on the throne. He would have an everlasting dynasty. David could have said, “God, that’s impossible.” Instead, David understood this promise and dared to pray, “God, I’m asking You for something big, not because I have all the talent, education, and connections, but simply because You promised it.”

The dreams God has placed in your heart may seem impossible. But you have to say, “God, You promised it; now I’m bold enough to ask You for it.” When you do, don’t be surprised if you have doubts. The enemy gets stirred up when you start asking God for big things. Doubts will bombard your mind when you start praying God-sized prayers and asking Him to take you places that you’ve never been, to touch a family member who has been off course, or to give you the hidden dreams of your heart. Negative thoughts will come: “Who do you think you are?” Just smile and reply, “I am a child of the Most High God.”

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You that You created me to live an abundant life, not a small life. Thank You for the challenge to ask You for big things and to see the greatness of Your power. Help me to dare to ask big and to believe for what seems impossible. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

Keep Celebrating

Today's Scripture

Wearing a linen ephod, David was dancing before the LORD with all his might, while he and all Israel were bringing up the ark of the LORD with shouts and the sound of trumpets. 2 Samuel 6:14–15, NIV

In 2 Samuel 6, David and his men had just recovered the ark of the covenant. There was a huge celebration, with shouts of joy, trumpets blowing, cymbals crashing. David was so excited that he danced with all of his might. He was the distinguished king, but he didn’t hold back from celebrating the goodness of God. When his wife Michal saw him dancing and leaping, it says she was filled with contempt and criticized him for acting like a vulgar person. David responded, “I was celebrating before the Lord, not you. What you think of me is not going to keep me from being who I am.” David wasn’t controlled by what other people thought.

When you’re honoring God, when you’re being your best, some people are going to find fault with you. They won’t give you their approval unless you lower your standards and conform to their thinking. That’s okay. Be a David. Have the attitude: “I don’t need your approval. I’m keeping God first place. I’m going to live with integrity. I’m going to do the right thing when it’s hard.”

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You for the people in my life who celebrate You and approve me. Help me, though, to honor You and be my best when other people find fault and try to change me. I declare that I will freely worship and serve You with all my might. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

My Will, His Will

Today's Scripture

“Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.” Luke 22:42, NIV

One of the best prayers we can ever pray is “God, not my will, but Your will be done.” When things aren’t working out your way, or when your prayers aren’t being answered as you would like, that either means that God is protecting you from danger up ahead, it’s not the right time, or God has something better in store. Too often, we’re shortsighted. He knows what’s best for us. He sees the big picture. He knows when something is going to be a dead end. He knows when someone is going to be a distraction to hinder us from our destiny.

Some of the things you may be frustrated about right now, ten years from now you will look back at and thank God for not answering that prayer the way you wanted or for not opening up that door. That’s what faith is all about. Why don’t you trust God? Believe that He has you in the palms of His hands and know that when it comes time for God to open a door, no man can keep it shut.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You that You know best when it comes to the things I want and ask You for. Thank You that You are directing my steps and that You’ll take me through the things I don’t understand. I am going to rest in faith, knowing that I am in the palms of Your hands. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”
