The Secret to a Changed Life

Today's Scripture

When Jesus came by, he looked up at Zacchaeus and called him by name. “Zacchaeus!” he said. “Quick, come down! I must be a guest in your home today.” Luke 19:5, NLT

Zacchaeus was the despised chief tax collector in the region, known for cheating people and called a notorious sinner. Yet when Jesus could have spent time with any of the local religious leaders, He chose Zacchaeus, which they found disgusting. Religion says, “He’s too bad. He’s scum. Stay away.” Sometimes religion portrays an image of God where you can’t measure up, and it uses guilt and your feelings of unworthiness to try to get you to live right. But God says, “I gladly welcome Zacchaeus. What he has done does not cancel out My mercy.”

When Zacchaeus came to understand that God loved him unconditionally, even when he had made mistakes, he decided to change his ways and salvation came to him. Sometimes we think that if we tell people all they’re doing wrong and make them feel guilty, they’ll change. But condemnation doesn’t make them do better. It is when they hear about a God who shows mercy when they deserve judgment that they’ll change. The Scripture says, “It’s the goodness of God that leads to repentance.”

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You that even though You know everything about me, You still invite Yourself to come to my house for dinner and bring the gift of salvation. Thank You that it’s not about my performance, about being good enough, about being worthy, but it’s about Your love. Welcome to my house. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

This Promise Is for You

Today's Scripture

The LORD kept his word and did for Sarah exactly what he had promised. Genesis 21:1, NLT

When God told Abraham and Sarah that they were going to have a baby, they were way past the age of childbearing. As time went by, with no sign of a child, Sarah told Abraham to sleep with her maid, thinking that way they could have a baby. But that wasn’t the promised child. God didn’t put the promise in someone else. He put the promise in Sarah, but she was discounting herself. “I’m too old. There’s no way.” She had to quit counting on someone else to make it happen. Finally, at ninety years old, she gave birth to Isaac.

God will put promises in your heart that seem impossible. Thoughts will tell you all the reasons it can’t happen. But how do you know that God is not going to do something extraordinary, uncommon? God put the promise in you, not someone else. You have to do as Sarah did and recognize who you are. You’re gifted, you’re talented, you’re valuable, and you’re fearfully and wonderfully made. You have the favor of God to see the promise fulfilled.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You that what seems impossible always remains possible with You. Thank You that You have put promises in me that are part of Your plan and purpose for me. I believe that You have given me favor beyond what I’ve imagined, so that I can become who You say I am. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

Bursting Through

Today's Scripture

“God has broken through my enemies by my hand like a breakthrough of water.” Therefore they called the name of that place Baal Perazim.
1 Chronicles 14:11, NKJV

David had just been anointed king over all Israel when he heard that the Philistine army was about to attack. He asked God what he should do, and God gave David the promise that his army would defeat the Philistines. God gave them such a great victory that David compared it to “the bursting forth of water,” and he named the place Baal Perazim, which means “the God of the breakthrough.” He was saying that when God releases His power, it is like a flood of His goodness, of His favor, of healing, of new opportunity.

You may have obstacles that look impassable or dreams that look unattainable. But when God releases a flood of His power, nothing will be able to stop you. You may not have the connections or have the funding to accomplish your dreams. But when God releases a flood of favor, it’s not a trickle or a stream. You won’t have to look for people to help you out. You need to get ready for good breaks, opportunity, and the right people to come bursting through.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You that You are the God who bursts through like a flood and brings me to my destiny. Thank You that Your power breaks through with Your favor, healing, and new opportunities. I believe that the forces for me are greater than any force that is against me. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

No Bitter Root

Today's Scripture

See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many. Hebrews 12:15, NIV

We all go through tough times, disappointments, and hurts. But we can’t let a bad break, a divorce, or a rough childhood cause us to get bitter. If we let bitter feelings take root, that bitter root will always produce bitter fruit. Bitter people don’t have good relationships. They’re too negative. When we’re bitter, it affects our attitudes. We see everything through a critical lens. Nothing is ever good enough. Bitter people can smile on the outside, but inside they’re critical and filled with self-pity. Bitterness infects everything you do and follows you everywhere you go.

When we hold on to things we should let go, refusing to forgive, remembering the worst, we only poison our own lives. God is saying, “Get over it.” Life is flying by. You don’t have time to waste another minute being negative, offended, or bitter. If someone did you wrong or you had a bad break, get over it, quit reliving all the hurt, and move forward. God will make it up to you, and you’ll come to the new beginning He has in store.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You that I can prevent bitter roots from ever starting to grow in my life by letting go of whatever holds me back. Show me if there is anything that is causing me to be bitter or resentful, and help me to release the bitterness and forgive any person who hurt me. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

Weeds

Today's Scripture

“The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field. But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away.” Matthew 13:24–25, NIV

In Matthew 13, Jesus tells a story about a man who planted wheat. He sowed good seed, doing the right thing. But while he slept, an enemy came and planted weeds in his soil that sprang up among his wheat. As big a problem as that was, the good news is that the weeds could not keep the wheat from being harvested, and the weeds were destroyed.

The message is that you shouldn’t be surprised by unexpected challenges, unexpected trouble, and unexpected difficulties even as you do the right things, honor God, and work to be your best every day. When you’re close to victory, when you’re on the verge of an accomplishment or breakthrough, when you’re about to go into the harvest season, that’s when unexpected problems will pop up as the enemy tries to keep you from moving forward. Don’t worry about it. Remember, our God has unexpected favor, unexpected breakthroughs, and unexpected promotion. Just wait and let God take care of it for you. Those weeds cannot keep you from your God-given destiny.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You that everything You have for me will be released and harvested in my life at the right time. Thank You that I can wait with great expectancy, knowing that You will take care of the enemy’s weeds. Help me to be patient and know that You are always working. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

A Merry Heart

Today's Scripture

A merry heart does good, like medicine, but a broken spirit dries the bones. Proverbs 17:22, NKJV

Not all sickness is from a lack of emotional well-being, but anytime you are weighed down with stress, burdens, disappointments, hurts, and worry, those negative emotions get into your soul and spill over to the physical. If you go around discouraged, defeated, and saying, “Look at this medical report. I’m never going to get well,” you’re helping that sickness. You’re giving it life, and you’re making yourself sicker.

Today’s Scripture says that when you’re cheerful because you know God is in control, you get free from the bitterness, the guilt, the stress, the worry, and the anger that tries to dominate your soul. When you’re thanking Him when you could be complaining, when you’re laughing when you could be crying, that’s sending healing to your body. That’s when healing is released. How many diseases will go away—headaches, high blood pressure, digestive problems—when we start taking our medicine by laughing, being joyful and good-natured? Learn to live from a place of faith and joy. It’s amazing what can happen to our physical well-being when our soul gets healthy.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You for the healing power that flows through a joyful heart. Thank You that You created me with a way to release some of the stress and other negative emotions that try to get in and poison my soul. I choose to rejoice and be glad in You today. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

How Great Is He?

Today's Scripture

“LORD, the God of our ancestors, are you not the God who is in heaven? You rule over all the kingdoms of the nations. Power and might are in your hand, and no one can withstand you.” 2 Chronicles 20:6, NIV

Many times when the people faced a big challenge in the Old Testament, they started their prayer by talking about the greatness of God. In today’s Scripture, King Jehoshaphat had three armies surrounding Judah. He gathered the people at the city square in Jerusalem to seek God. He didn’t say, “God, where are You? We’re about to be captured.” He said, “Lord, You alone are God. You are the ruler of the nations. You are powerful and mighty. No one can stand against you. We remember how you brought us through war, through famine, through disease. Now we’re asking you, O great God, to deliver us from these mighty armies.” When you remind yourself of who you’re dealing with, you won’t pray weak prayers. You’ll pray boldly. You’ll ask God to do the impossible, what seems unlikely. Those are prayers that get God’s attention. The people of Judah didn’t even have to fight. The enemy armies turned on each other and defeated themselves.

Where will you be in ten years if you do as Jehoshaphat did and start praying bold prayers?

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You that You are the great God who is in Heaven, the ruler of the nations, and You are fighting my battles. Thank You for how You go beyond my requests and exceed my expectations. I believe that You will do exceedingly abundantly above all that I ask or think. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

A Word of Encouragement

Today's Scripture

“Say to the righteous that it shall be well with them.” Isaiah 3:10, NKJV

Everyone in your life is fighting a battle. They’re dealing with something. They may not show it, but there’s a load they’re carrying. Thoughts are telling them that it’s not going to work out. It is always good to pray for others, but today’s Scripture also says, “Say to the righteous that it’s going to work out. Everything’s going to be okay.” Just give a word of encouragement when they’re under a heavy load. Just let them know that you care, remind them that God is still on the throne. You don’t have to have all the answers to their problems. It’s easy to feel intimidated because sometimes the situation is so complicated. Different people may be involved from very different backgrounds, and you’re not sure what to tell them about what they are going through. But you don’t have to solve the problem; that’s God’s job. Your part is to just nourish their soul and say, “I care about you. I’m standing with you. You’re going to make it.” Those kind words are what put people back on their feet.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You for Your hand of blessing in my life. I ask You to work through me and help me to speak kind words, offer compliments, give encouragement, and lift up those around me. Help me to listen and to bring Your healing presence into others’ lives. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

Delete the Old Story

Today's Scripture

For she kept saying to herself, If I only touch His garment, I shall be restored to health. Matthew 9:21, AMPC

In Mark 5, a lady had been sick for twelve years, spent all her money going to many doctors, but nothing helped. Her story was: “This sickness is permanent. There’s nothing else I can do.” But then she heard that Jesus was passing through her town. Despite how she felt, despite the circumstances and all she’d been told, she deleted her old story and started telling herself a new story. She said, “When I touch His garments, I’m going to be healed.” Faith began to rise in her heart. She kept saying to herself, “Healing is coming.” Pressing through the crowd, she touched His robe and was healed instantly.

It’s easy to let defeated thoughts, “can’t do it” thoughts, “it’s never going to work out” thoughts, play in your mind. You have to say, “No, I’m deleting this story. I will be the exception. I will get well. I will see my family restored. I will break this addiction. I will accomplish my dream.” Give God something to work with. You can’t have an old story and see the new things He wants to do.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You that I have the power to delete the thoughts that keep me trapped in an old story of defeat. Thank You that my faith can open the way for You to do amazing things and write a new story. I am reaching out and touching You by faith today, knowing that victory will be mine. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

Be a Nehemiah

Today's Scripture

When I heard these things, I sat down and wept. For some days I mourned and fasted and prayed before the God of heaven. Nehemiah 1:4, NIV

When Nehemiah heard that the walls of Jerusalem, his home city, had been torn down and burned, and that the people who survived were in great danger, he wept. He was heartbroken. For days he mourned. He asked God to do something. Even though he was a thousand miles away from Jerusalem and had no means to do anything himself, God put a dream in his heart to go back home and rebuild those walls. And amazingly, he did.

It’s significant that Nehemiah was weeping over what he wanted to make better. His heart was broken over the wrongs that he saw. This wasn’t about having a big position, being well known, acquiring more. His dream was tied to building the kingdom, helping people rise higher, seeing his family reach their potential. When your heart is to make a difference, when your motives are right, when you’re moved over people you want to help, moved over loved ones who are struggling, you will see God do miracles. God is looking for Nehemiahs, for people He can entrust with influence, with favor, with resources.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You for the burdens that You put in my heart for others and for the work of Your kingdom. Thank You that my heart can break and I can weep over what I know breaks Your heart. I believe that You are going to help me make a difference in others’ lives. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”
