The good of the country is best served with a $17 Trillion dollar public debt that we have to borrow money to pay the interest on? Really? Your economics professor should have been fired if you truly believe that.

My economics professor knows that you need to both cut spending AND increase revenue to balance the budget and pay down the debt as quickly as possible. The Republicans blind obedience to the tea party pledge they won't raise any taxes will sink this nation......and like I said, they just don't care.

Please explain what revenue you are taling about? The taxes that will raise $3 billion? You thik that will pay down $17 trillion? Seriously? It is all for show so Obama can use it in the election. Anyone who can add 2+2 can figure that out.

Archer, not trying to pick on you here, but this is what is scary. People do not comprehend the numbers and reality. "pay down the debt as quickly as possible" That is so laughable! There is no paying down the debt. EVER!!!! We pay interest-only on it forever. And it grows, forever! You actually believe there is a chance we pay down principle?

I am sooo tired of trying to explain this. I suppose you believe the SS Medicare Trust funds really exist too.

same old tired rhetoric Viking.....get something original would you please?

For those who can't, or won't read....I did not say raising the tax on the rich would solve the problem, Obama did not say raising the tax on the rich would solve the problem....in fact NO ONE has said that raising taxes on the rich will solve the problem. Nor will cutting spending solve the problem.......we need to do everything we can to cut spending AND raise some taxes.....closing corporate loopholes....raising the limit on medicare and SS deductions.....there are a lot of things we can do to bring the federal budget into balance and lower the national debt.....I suggest we do them ALL....not just what Democrats want....not just what Republicans want.....ALL......or is that just too complicated for the conservative mind to comprehend??????

Yes I do comprehend the numbers joe....I'm an accountant, it's what I do. And I know that the only way to tackle a problem the size of our national debt is to use every tool you have to whittle away at it......both spending cuts, and tax increases, it won't be gone in a couple years, or probably a couple decades, but it can be dealt with if we stop fighting among ourselves and actually get practical......we need to do EVERYTHING. Duh!

Yep, we do need to do everything. And there is that deficit commission report from last year with a good roadmap just collecting dust and being ignored. Reform entitlements and the whole tax code, not nickel and dime demagoguery and politicking.

I have counseled enough people on how to get out of debt to know that just cutting expenditures is rarely enough.....you often need to increase revenue, at least in the short term......and that increase in revenue is used solely for debt payments, along with whatever cuts in spending can be made. I have never counseled a couple to starve their children, to throw grandma out on the street, to avoid doctor visits, or to sell everything they own and live in a homeless shelter. I have suggested they get a part time job along with their full time career to give them the extra income to pay down the debt faster than would otherwise be possible. Its not forever....it's for now, to balance the budget and keep the debt from spiraling out of control. Get your fiscal house in order, run the government on a balanced budget.....THEN think about tax cuts.

It's up to the poor and the middle class to take all the hits on this.

Obama claims to want to stick it to the rich, but clearly he is all talk and no action. How many taxes has he raised on his Wall Street buddies? Guess he prefers that that his millionaire friends like him and continue to donate to his campaign. If you look at the record Obama has actually given more money to the rich than to the poor than W by reducing social security taxes.

So you can continue to support the man who thinks you are someone he can fool by preaching wealth equity but not delivering.

Would you suggest I vote for a Republican? which one of the many choices isn't gunning for SS or medicare? Which one has suggested that we close the tax loopholes for corporations? which one has suggested that we include an increase in revenue along with cutting spending? Which one is in favor of creating a health care system that includes ALL Americans? Which one is for protecting a woman's right to choose? Which one is concerned about our climate and our environment? Which one supports equal rights for all Americans to marry the person they choose? Find me that candidate and I'll vote for him/her
