American Millionaires: 1,400 Paid No U.S. Income Taxes In 2009

New tax data from the Internal Revenue service shows that in 2009, incomes fell, unemployment claims rose, and the U.S. economy shed nearly two million taxpayers.

And of the 235,413 taxpayers who earned $1 million or more in 2009, 1,470 of them paid no taxes.

According to the data, the average income for American taxpayers fell to $54,283 -- a drop of $3,516, or about 6.1 percent, between 2008 and 2009. Not only that, but the overall number of taxpayers -- that is, individuals or married couples filing with the IRS -- fell by almost two million.

"What you're seeing is the devastation of the massive loss of jobs and the effects of the real recession on real Americans," said Ed Kleinbard, a law professor at the University of Southern California.

The numbers, part of a package analyzing 2009 tax returns that the IRS has just made available, reflect a grim picture of the recent past.

Two things. HOW does this prove it is the Republicans? In 2009 the Dems controlled everything and the Dems controlled all spending and both houses in 2007 and 2008. And second, you are talking about .6 percent that snuck through out of all the millionaires. So just over 1/2 of 1%. What is your point on that one?

If only the title of this thread were not just brain dead but had some validity, there might be hope.

It's called History, look into it

Which only goes to show how well you have studied history VL. Take a minute and read your own link. What happened then was the result of cutting spending and increasing taxes. Remind you of a plan forwarded by anyone we know in DC these days? You ought to be on your knees thanking the TEA Party, not vilifying them, for preventing Obama from repeating yet another mistake if you think that the gains were given back when FDR increased taxes and cut spending, which is precisely the tack that Obama, Democrats in Congress and regressives in general has been championing as of late.

I'm not ignoring that fact....they, like the more reasonable Republicans, held their collective noses and voted for the only bill available to avoid default on the debt. The point is....it should never have come to this bill or nothing. Boehner and Obama/Reid had a much better bill/compromise that would have gone after the deficit to the tune of $4 trillion.....but the tea party dug in it's heels and said no to Boehner......so we get the really, really horrible bill at the last minute. yep......this coming recession is all on the tea party for not playing well with others.

The votes lost to the TEA Party could have been made up on the other side of the aisle if Pelosi and the minority that she leads had gone to the Speaker and told him they would support such a bill. The Democrats might be a minority in the current House, but they still hold a larger percentage than the Republicans did when it was Pelosi who was Speaker.

What is that, about one-half of one percent or so compared to 54% of the rest of the nation? You've got to be kidding me, right? And they paid no taxes? Hogwash, a bald faced lie. They would have paid the federal privilege taxes on their income, they would have paid federal excise taxes, they would have paid federal taxes on the fuel they purchased, federal taxes on their telephones (mobile and land lines). The reality is that Huffpo generalized to distort reality - which surprises no one.

According to the data, the average income for American taxpayers fell to $54,283 -- a drop of $3,516, or about 6.1 percent, between 2008 and 2009. Not only that, but the overall number of taxpayers -- that is, individuals or married couples filing with the IRS -- fell by almost two million.

Could that 2 million drop be attributed to folks who left the country? Obama told us the deportation numbers were up and we know that the unemployment affects illegal aliens as well as citizens. We also know illegal aliens have filed tax returns in past years (remember Buck and his illegal search?), which they wouldn't do if they have been deported or left to go back to Mexico. Huffpo just proved that liars figure here, nothing more. They do not know who those 2 million are, or why they didn't file. Everyone is required to file taxes, even those whose only source of revenue is the charity coming from the DC government.

No everyone is NOT required to file taxes.....a married couple with less than $18,700 does not have to file a tax return.....and there are different thresholds for different filing statuses.
