Hydroxychloroquine WILL Save US

Want studies? Go to the PubMed database and do a search for Hydroxychloroquine + COVID (or coronavirus), new papers are being added every day (way cooler than back when I started in science and you had to wait until the hard copy of the journal came out, which would seriously hamper rapid responses to pandemics such as this). Here's the first page of those results when I just did it:

Reviews of the published literature to date are especially helpful for finding more, and seeing what the experts are finding from a 30,000' view:
A systematic review of the prophylactic role of chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine in Coronavirus Disease-19 (COVID-19).
Int J Rheum Dis. 2020 Apr 13. doi: 10.1111/1756-185X.13842. [Epub ahead of print]

METHODS:

PubMed, EMBASE, ClinicalTrials.gov, ICTRP, and Cochrane Library databases were searched for studies that evaluated the prophylactic role of CQ or HCQ on SARS-CoV-2 (pre-clinical studies) or COVID-19 (clinical studies) until 30 March 2020. The available literature was critically appraised.
RESULTS:

A total of 45 articles were screened and five (three in vitro pre-clinical studies and two clinical opinions) were included. The pre-clinical studies showed the prophylactic effects of CQ and HCQ against SARS-CoV-2. On the other hand, the clinical opinions advocated the prophylactic use of CQ and HCQ against COVID-19. However, no original clinical studies on the prophylactic role of CQ or HCQ on COVID-19 were available.
CONCLUSION:

Although pre-clinical results are promising, till date, there is dearth of evidence to support the efficacy of CQ or HCQ in preventing COVID-19. Considering potential safety issues and the likelihood of imparting a false sense of security, prophylaxis with CQ or HCQ against COVID-19 needs to be thoroughly evaluated in observational studies or high quality randomized controlled studies.

Derek Lowe's commentary on drug discovery and the pharma industry. An editorially independent blog from the publishers of Science Translational Medicine. All content is Derek’s own, and he does not in any way speak for his employer.

We have new data on hydroxychloroquine therapy to discuss. The numbers will not clear anything up.

SC,
I read Derek Lowe's article earlier this week. As an organic chemist (his training) he is disconcerted by the fact that Raoult's report did not have a control group. In the comments, it was noted that Raoult said
11 April, 2020 at 10:06 am
The French Dr. does not use control groups because he says it is not ethical to kill people.
Derek Lowe says:
11 April, 2020 at 10:16 am
That is indeed his rationalization.

Sorry, but I don't live in Lowe's laboratory. Raoult dealt with sick patients. That is not the time to obtain informed consent for a double blinded drug vs. placebo.
Overall, I enjoyed his article.
We can discuss this article in a separate thread if you wish. Particularly his presentation of the multi-site study of the use of HCQ in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis from which the following conclusion is reached. "Short-term hydroxychloroquine treatment is safe, but addition of azithromycin may induce heart failure and cardiovascular mortality, potentially due to synergistic effects on QT length. We call for caution if such combination is to be used in the management of Covid-19."

Another good reason to take HCQ/AZ, the CIA recommends against it.

According to the Washington Post, the CIA privately advised its workforce that taking an anti-malarial drug hydroxychloroquine to treat Coronavirus has potentially dangerous side effects, including possible sudden death.

I'm confused by your statement. Are you implying that because the CIA is advising not taking this drug that you are for taking this drug?

To be clear, if I had signs and symptoms of Covid-19 and tested positive, I would take HCQ/AZ if recommended by my physician. ( The bonus being that the CIA is warning against it.)

By the way would you take HCQ/AZ if you had the above presentation? If not what therapy other than that of the Cuomo family would you consent to?

Do you always try to use veiled anti-guv colloquialism'ish postings and half assed gotcha's that never find their mark? Asking for a friend.....

I actually messaged MY Dr and she would NOT recommend using or even suggesting HCQ/AZ for me or any of her patients. There is still NO actual full scope study that shows any real effectiveness and so far, many of the reports she is seeing is that is causing more harm than good. One of the first lines in a Dr's Hippocratic Oath is "First do no harm". From what I can tell is that you would do anything to try and defend your leaders ignorant positions and statements. It's really amusing to watch you guys twist and turn yourselves into pretzels trying to support your leader. Good luck with that.

To not prescribe HCQ/AZ or prescribe it, is a physician's prerogative. That said, what did she say she would do to treat your Covid-19 infection?

That was not an answer to my question. Are you saying that you do not trust the CIA to tell their employees the truth about a potential drug cure?
