Do you Think Teachers Unions should be disbanded?

And don't forget - teachers do not pay Social Security taxes. Their take home pay would reflect someone who makes quite a bit more because those taxes are not snatched out of the paycheck like the rest of us.

So how can a teacher whose JOB it is to teach our kids to READ and write, be failing with 2/3 of the kids at even teaching them to READ? THAT IS THEIR JOB!!! And we have almost doubled how much we pay per student in the last 10 years or so and it hasn't improved. And these same teachers are out protesting because they want their jobs protected and to keep better benefits than most any other profession out there, and THIS is their resume? We are failing 2/3 thirds of the time?

It's interesting that we don't have any teachers on here defending their position - Oh, that's right - they have to work.

Actually, they are back to work in WI.

And I will add that if your kid can't read by the 8th grade then you're a failure as a parent too...

How do non-union states mesure up? and Viking can you please link a source to your comments?

Only 5 states do not have collective bargaining for educators and have deemed it illegal.
Their ranking on ACT/SAT scores:
South Carolina - 50th
North Carolina - 49th
Georgia - 48th
Texas - 47th
Virginia - 44th

Wisconsin is currently ranked #2.

Yep, and five of those states did considerably worse on the study that Viking cited above:

South Carolina - 76% below proficient
North Carolina - 71% below proficient
Georgia - 73% below proficient
Texas - 73% below proficient
Virginia - 68% below proficient

I would assume you have no valid source except for a repeated tweet or email. These facts do not tell the real story.

As Paul Harvey used to say " Here is the rest of the story"

State scores on the SAT and ACT are hard to compare directly, because there’s so much variation in how many students take the tests. In addition, I haven’t yet found a source that combines SAT and ACT scores into a composite ranking like the one in the tweet. Looking at charts for SAT and ACT results separately, however, here’s what I found:

Wisconsin ranks 3rd in the nation in SAT scores, but with a participation rate of just 4%. On the ACT, with a much more representative partcipation rate of 69%, it was tied for 17th. In comparison…

Virginia was 34th on the SAT with 67% participation, 13th on the ACT with 22% participation.
Texas was 45th on the SAT with 53% participation, 33rd on the ACT with 33% participation.
Georgia was 48th on the SAT with 74% participation, 34th on the ACT with 44% participation.
North Carolina was 38th on the SAT with 63% participation, 20th on the ACT with 16% participation.
South Carolina was 49th on the SAT with 66% participation, 44th on the ACT with 52% participation.

Those number seem to bolster STDS's "facts". Those are pretty crappy numbers any way you look at it.

The Right likes to claim union teachers are more concerned about their pay and benefits than the students, but Texas is a big fly in their ointment. Their teachers don't have unions and the schools score poorly. Because of the border and having to educate illegal immigrants? Maybe, but I would like to see Arizona & New Mexico's union participation and scores.
