He Controls the Fish

Today's Scripture

But Simon answered and said to Him, “Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; nevertheless at Your word I will let down the net.” Luke 5:5, NKJV

As Jesus was preaching along the Sea of Galilee, so many people pressed in on Him that He got into Peter’s boat and pushed out from shore in order to keep speaking. When He was finished, He told Peter to launch into the deep and he would catch a great haul of fish. Peter had fished all night and caught nothing. He was a professional fisherman and knew when and where to fish. Peter could have thought, “Who is this man to tell me how to fish?” But he responded, “Jesus, this doesn’t make sense. Nevertheless, because You say so, I’m going to do it.” He went out and caught so many fish that his nets began to break, and when his partners in another boat came to help, both boats were so loaded down that they almost sank.

God controls the fish. He knows where your provision is, and He knows how to get it to you. It may not make sense or seem logical. But God loves to do things out of the ordinary, so you’ll know it was His hand.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You that there is promotion, healing, restoration, and abundance when I walk in humility and obey Your word to me. Thank You that You control the fish. Help me to humble myself and do the thing You’re asking me to do when I don’t understand. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

He Knows Your Name

Today's Scripture

When Jesus came by, he looked up at Zacchaeus and called him by name. “Zacchaeus!” he said. “Quick, come down! I must be a guest in your home today.” Luke 19:5, NLT

Zacchaeus had climbed a tree to get a glimpse of Jesus as He passed by. Amidst the waving, shouting crowd that had gathered to get His attention, Jesus suddenly stopped and looked up at Zacchaeus. Now all the eyes were on him. Zacchaeus thought, “Oh no! He knows I’m a crooked tax collector. He’s going to condemn me for cheating people.” But Jesus stunned him by saying, “Zacchaeus!” He thought, “How does He know my name?” Can I tell you that God knows your name? You may have never spoken to Him, but He’ll speak to you. He doesn’t hold your faults against you. No, He calls your name.

What’s significant is that the name Zacchaeus means “pure one.” Jesus could have called him “scum” as the crowd did, but He called his name, “Pure one!” He was not calling him who he was but who he could become. That was the turning point in his life. Zacchaeus quit being dishonest and started making decisions that honored God. Don’t go by what people call you; go by, and live by, what God calls you.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You that You see beyond what I have been to what I can become, and You call me by name. Thank You that You call me forgiven, redeemed, a precious treasure, a masterpiece, and Your child. I declare that Your kindness and goodness has turned me from my sin. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

Truth Tellers

Today's Scripture

Rehoboam rejected the advice the elders gave him and consulted the young men who had grown up with him and were serving him. 1 Kings 12:8, NIV

In 1 Kings 12, King Solomon had died and his son Rehoboam was about to take the throne and rule over an unmatched kingdom of wealth and influence. When the people of Israel asked him to lighten their harsh labor and heavy taxes, he asked the elders who had served his father for advice. They said to do as the people asked, but Rehoboam rejected their counsel and turned to his young friends. They told him to do just the opposite and make it even harder on the people. These young men knew this is what Rehoboam wanted to hear. It fed his ego, made him feel more powerful, more in charge. But this bad advice caused the Israelites to rebel, tragically splitting the kingdom between Judah and Israel.

Don’t make Rehoboam’s mistake. You need people who tell you what you need to hear, not what you want to hear. Don’t surround yourself with yes people who always agree and are afraid to tell you the truth or you may not listen to them anymore. Wrong voices lead to wrong choices.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You for making it so plain that I need to be selective about whom I surround myself with. Help me to find people who will tell me the truth if I’m doing something wrong or going in the wrong direction. And help me to listen well and make the right choices. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

Don’t Take the Bait

Today's Scripture

Avoiding a fight is a mark of honor; only fools insist on quarreling. Proverbs 20:3, NLT

It’s easy to get into conflict with others, to be offended and upset by what they say or do, and to want to pay people back. But you’re not supposed to engage in every conflict, and it’s not your job to straighten them out. Don’t fight battles that are not between you and your destiny. Most of the things we face are simply distractions. The best thing you can do is ignore it, don’t give it the time of day. Let God fight your battles. Let God be your vindicator.

When something comes against you, you need to ask yourself, “Is this a battle worth fighting or is it simply a distraction?” You have to stay focused. Avoiding a fight, not taking the bait, not being drawn into the conflict takes your face being set. It takes discipline to say, “I’m not going to respond. I’m not going to sink down to their level and waste my time and energy. I have a destiny to fulfill.” Keep honoring God, being your best, and He’ll get you to where you’re supposed to be.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You for calling me to be a person marked by honor. Help me to know when to avoid a fight as well as the right way and the right time to quietly and calmly address my differences with others. I want to do it Your way and leave it to You to fight my battles. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

The Breath of God

Today's Scripture

“Therefore, prophesy to them and say, ‘This is what the Sovereign LORD says: O my people, I will open your graves of exile and cause you to rise again. Then I will bring you back to the land of Israel.’” Ezekiel 37:12, NLT

The Israelites who had been taken into exile in Babylon complained about how big their obstacles were and how they would never make it back to their homeland. They said, “We’re just dead bones and our hope is gone.” But God gave the prophet Ezekiel a vision of a valley filled with dry bones. He asked Ezekiel, “Do you believe these dead bones can live?” Ezekiel could have said, “God, that’s impossible. They’re just bones.” But instead he said, “Yes, Lord, I believe.” Then he spoke to the bones, and those bones suddenly joined together and morphed into people. God breathed life into them, and they stood up like a vast army. It was the promise of the Israelites being restored to their homes.

You may have dreams you’ve buried, things you were believing for that you think are dead. God is saying, “I’m about to open up your graves and bring those things back to life.” He’s about to breathe new life into your health, your finances, your children, your dreams. Things are going to come together that you thought were impossible.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You that You have the power to breathe life into the things that seem dead in my life. Thank You that You are challenging me to believe again, to believe for more. I believe that as I speak words of faith, You will make things happen that I could never make happen. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

Keep Praising

Today's Scripture

He never doubted that God would keep his promise, and he never stopped believing. He grew stronger in his faith and gave praise to God. Romans 4:20–21, NCV

When Abraham was seventy-five years old, God promised him a son. Isaac, the promised child, was born twenty-five years later. How did he wait during those twenty-five years? Was he complaining, “God, when is it going to happen? I don’t understand it”? No, he kept giving God praise and saying, “Lord, I know my son is on the way. Thank You for my baby. Thank You that You are faithful to Your promises.” He kept believing and believing, and finally the baby came.

As with Abraham, you may have believed God’s promise but nothing’s changing, no doors have opened. But you’re constantly thanking God, living with an attitude of faith and expectancy. You may not realize it, but every time you thank God, you are close to seeing your promise. All of heaven comes to attention when you praise God. The breakthrough is about to happen. Don’t stop praising. Don’t stop believing. What God has put in your heart is in transit. It has your name on it. It’s headed your direction. It’s just a matter of time before it shows up.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You that You are my God and that’s reason enough to never waver in believing Your promises. Thank You that my faith can grow stronger through this. I am going to keep believing, keep praising, and thanking You for what’s on the way. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

Divine Connections

Today's Scripture

Then Boaz asked his foreman, “Who is that young woman over there? Who does she belong to?” Ruth 2:5, NLT

Ruth was a widowed Moabite who went into Boaz’s fields every morning and picked up the wheat that the harvesters missed. She and her mother-in-law, Naomi, were living off scraps, barely able to survive. It didn’t look as though there was or ever would be a blessing on Ruth’s life. But when God caused Ruth to be noticed by and find favor with Boaz, what followed was one blessing after another. She ended up falling in love with Boaz and they married. She went from working in the field to owning the field.

When you have the blessing of God on your life, He will cause you to find favor with the right people. You don’t have to play up to people or try to manipulate someone or convince them to like you. God will cause you to stand out as Ruth did. He’ll bring divine connections, people who want to help you. If you could see where God is going to take you, the doors He’s going to open, and the influence He’s going to give you, it would boggle your mind.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You that You know every hardship and difficult situation I have faced and will face. Thank You that You have more blessings and favor for me than I can dream. I believe that Your favor is surrounding me and breakthroughs are on the way. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

Do It Afraid

Today's Scripture

Then the LORD became angry with Moses. Exodus 4:14, NLT

When the Israelites were in slavery in Egypt, God said to Moses, “Go and tell Pharaoh to let My people go.” Moses responded, “God, I can’t do that. I don’t speak well. I stutter.” Moses was saying, “God, You didn’t give me that gift. I’m afraid. Send someone with that skill.” He kept making excuse after excuse, and finally God became angry with him. He was not angry because Moses had flaws. He wasn’t angry because Moses stuttered. He was angry because Moses saw his gift as not enough. Moses was afraid, hiding it, thinking that he didn’t have what it takes when God said he did.

God is not displeased with us because we have weaknesses or shortcomings. He’s displeased when we’re not using the talents He’s given us, when we’re making excuses and discounting our gifts. God wouldn’t ask you to do something if He hadn’t already given you what you need. Quit discounting yourself. You have to get out of your comfort zone and do it afraid. If you play it safe all your life, you’ll never reach your full potential.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You for the gifts and the talents You put in me. Thank You that You made me and whatever You ask me to do You will make sure I have the ability to do it. I will be faithful to develop what You’ve given me and be bold to step out of my comfort zone and use it. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

Love and Loyalty

Today's Scripture

Don’t lose your grip on Love and Loyalty. Tie them around your neck; carve their initials on your heart. Earn a reputation for living well in God’s eyes and the eyes of the people. Proverbs 3:3–4, MSG

Most people say that at some point in their life, it’s hard to stay committed to their marriage, to their dream, to their job, to a friend. It’s been said that halfway through on the road to your destiny, you’ll feel like giving up. Some people give in and go back when it’s no longer exciting, growing, and going their way. The other people stay committed and keep moving forward no matter how they’re feeling.

The dreams God has put in your heart, the promises you’re standing on, may be taking longer than you thought. You don’t see any sign of it happening. That’s a test. Are you going to get discouraged and give up on what you’re believing for? Stay committed and loyal when your relationships are troubled. Keep doing the right thing when it’s difficult. Keep being your best when it’s not fair. It may not be easy, but you have what it takes. God is in control. Dig your heels in and say, “I’m in it for the long haul.” Be committed to love and loyalty and never giving up.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You that You have never been wishy-washy in Your commitment to love me at all times. Thank You that I have the can-do power to be steadfast when it’s hard. Help me to stay committed in all my relationships and in my work, to be someone others can always count on. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”
