What You Smashed

Today's Scripture

“Chisel out two stone tablets like the first ones….Come up to me on the mountain, and I will write on the tablets the same words that were on the ones you smashed.” Deuteronomy 10:1–2, NLT

In Deuteronomy 10, God took Moses to the top of Mount Sinai and encompassed the mountain in a great cloud, with lightning and thunder. It was a powerful, holy, majestic moment when the finger of God inscribed the Ten Commandments on two stone tablets. But afterward when Moses saw the Israelites worshipping a golden calf, he was so angry that he raised the stone tablets, something sacred that God had entrusted to him, and smashed them into pieces.

We all have mishandled something incredibly valuable that God has given us. Perhaps we let our anger, our pride, our having to be right, tear a precious relationship apart. We mishandled the career God gave us. We gave in to compromise and lost our integrity. If God gave us what we deserve, we’d be done. But God is the God of another chance. He said to Moses and to us, in effect, “You smashed something sacred. But if you go back up the mountain, I’ll give it to you again.” Don’t let guilt or regrets keep you back. He’s going to restore what you threw down.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You that when I make mistakes and mishandle what You’ve given me, You don’t say, ‘Too bad that you messed up. Now you’re on your own.’ Thank You that You don’t give me what I deserve but You give me another chance. I will not let regrets and guilt hold me back. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

Patience

Today's Scripture

Don’t be impatient for the Lord to act! Keep traveling steadily along his pathway and in due season he will honor you with every blessing. Psalm 37:34, TLB

When you’re waiting for a promise from God to come to pass, it’s easy to get frustrated and think, “God, if You’re going to bring this to pass in six months or in two years, why wait? Why don’t You bring the right person, or the healing, or the promotion now?” God knows what He’s doing. If He promoted you before you were ready, you wouldn’t be able to handle it. It would be a burden rather than a blessing. He has to get you prepared for what He has in store. He loves you too much to let it happen too soon.

You may have a promise from God in your heart, but you don’t see anything happening. God is using the waiting period to do a work in you. If you pass the test, if you have faith and patience, then you’re growing, your character is developing, your spiritual muscles are getting stronger. To take you to a higher level is going to require more integrity, more discipline, more commitment. Keep doing the right thing. Your season is coming.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You that there is a purpose for times of waiting, whether I understand it or not. Help me to be patient, to keep traveling steadily along Your pathway, to be consistent, knowing that it’s all part of Your process. I believe that what You promised is still en route. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

Royalty

Today's Scripture

“And have made us kings and priests to our God; and we shall reign on the earth.” Revelation 5:10, NKJV

In 2 Samuel 4, after King Saul and his son Jonathan had been killed in battle, Saul’s little grandson, Mephibosheth, was fleeing for his life when he suffered a tragic fall and was disabled, unable to walk. He went from the palace to barely surviving, living in exile in a poor, run-down city named Lo Debar. But the change in his circumstances did not change the fact that he was royalty. Years later, King David brought him back to the palace to live as royalty and restored his family’s land.

The Scripture says that God has made us kings. You may feel like you’re living in Lo Debar today, with difficulties coming against you. That’s where you are, but that’s not who you are. Nothing you’ve been through has changed your royal identity. No person who did you wrong, no bad break, and no mistake you’ve made has changed your name. You are still a child of the King of kings with royal blood in your veins. He is about to pick you up, breathe new life into your dreams, and propel you toward your destiny.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You for loving me and looking for me because You want me to have all that belongs to me as Your child. Thank You that You see me as royalty no matter what my circumstances look like, even when I’ve failed. I declare that I am becoming more and more like who You say I am. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

Planned Long Ago

Today's Scripture

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. Jeremiah 29:11, KJV

In life there are times when it looks as though our opponents—the sickness, the depression, the financial loss—are getting the best of us. It’s easy to get discouraged. You can go through life fighting everything that doesn’t go your way, being worried, negative, and upset. Or you can stay in peace, knowing that God is directing your steps, even the detours and the dead ends. You have to remind yourself that the end has been set by God.

When it feels as though you’re far behind, outnumbered, outsized, and outclassed, instead of being discouraged, have a new perspective. It’s not the end. The person who betrayed you didn’t stop God’s plan. The setback didn’t change His ending. The negatives in your life don’t have that kind of power. It just means you’re about to see a major comeback. At any moment things are going to shift in your favor. A good break, a healing, a promotion, or a restoration is coming. God has the final say. He has already established the end and will fulfill His purpose.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You that in the midst of a very insecure world that I can rest in the security of knowing that my end has been set. Thank You for Your plans for my life, plans that are full of hope and an abundant future. I believe that You make everything work out at the right time. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

Celebrate Who You Are

Today's Scripture

There has never been the slightest doubt in my mind that the God who started this great work in you would keep at it and bring it to a flourishing finish on the very day Christ Jesus appears.Philippians 1:6, MSG

Too many people go through life feeling wrong inside. They get up every morning and take inventory of their faults and weaknesses. There’s nothing the enemy would love any more than for you to go through life focused on your failures, how you don’t measure up, being against yourself. Don’t fall into that trap. When he whispers those condemning thoughts, “You blew your diet. You were late to work. You lost your temper. You gave in to that temptation,” just remind yourself that you are not a finished product. You may have some things wrong with you, but you have a lot more right with you.

Learn to celebrate who you are and not beat yourself up because of who you’re not. God is changing you from glory to glory. You don’t have to be a finished product before you feel good about yourself. The more you give God thanks for what He’s done, the more He releases strength, favor, and new levels. Keep honoring God, being your best, and He’ll get you to where you’re supposed to be.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You for the good work You’re doing in my life, and I am absolutely convinced that You will keep developing and bringing it to full completion. Thank You that I can be free from the enemy’s condemnation. I declare that I will not be moved from believing. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

Well Done

Today's Scripture

“The master said, ‘Well done, my good and faithful servant. You have been faithful in handling this small amount, so now I will give you many more responsibilities. Let’s celebrate together!’” Matthew 25:23, NLT

In Jesus’ parable of the bags of gold in Matthew 25, the master entrusted one servant with five bags, another with two bags, and the third with one bag. Each received according to his ability. The point of the parable was not how many gifts God has given us, but that we be faithful to use whatever gifts are ours. He’s saying that you can’t wait for the perfect time or when you’re in your comfort zone. You have to take steps of faith now, and if you don’t use your gifts, you’ll lose them. God is expecting You to stir up what He has put in you, develop those gifts, and use them to give Him a return on His investment. Keep using what you have and He will give you more.

Don’t compare your gifts to someone else. You’re not in a competition with them. Be the best that you can be with what you have. Take the gifts you have, be faithful to develop them, and God will give you more ability, more skill, more favor, more influence.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You that You are sovereign in the gifts and the calling You have given me. Thank You that I can take steps of faith today to stir up my gifts and be faithful to use them. I will celebrate and develop all that You have given me. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

The Same Power

Today's Scripture

“Remember the miraculous signs and wonders, and the strong hand and powerful arm with which he brought you out of Egypt. The LORD your God will use this same power against all the people you fear.” Deuteronomy 7:19, NLT

The nation of Israel had wandered around in the desert for forty years, and God was about to take them into the Promised Land. But there were seven nations in their path that were much bigger and stronger. Moses didn’t know what they were going to do. In the natural, they could never defeat them. But God told them that He was going to go before them and clear out these nations. They were to remember how He miraculously delivered them from Pharaoh and to know that He would defeat the enemies before them.

You will face times when the odds are against you. It’s easy to think, “This sickness is much bigger than me. This addiction is much stronger than me. These people coming against me are much more powerful.” Don’t worry. God will go before you and clear the path. On your own you may be outnumbered. What you’re up against may be bigger, stronger, more talented, and have more resources, but you’re not on your own. The God who controls the universe says He will take care of your enemies.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You for the strength that rises within me whenever I remember what You have done in my life and in others’ lives. Thank You for the times You opened doors that seemed closed and defeated problems that were far too big for me. I will not be afraid. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

Living Balanced

Today's Scripture

Then Jesus said, “Let’s go off by ourselves to a quiet place and rest awhile.” He said this because there were so many people coming and going that Jesus and his apostles didn’t even have time to eat.Mark 6:31, NLT

You’re a three-part being—spiritual, physical, and emotional. You have to take care of each one. You can pray for twenty-four hours a day, but you’re not going to feel well physically. You can go to the gym and work out five hours a day, seven days a week, but if you’re not taking time for your spiritual and emotional side, you’re not going to be your best. You can’t stay up all night and not get proper sleep and expect to have the passion you need. You can’t drink twenty cups of coffee a day, eat junk food, and expect to feel well. Some people are discouraged, don’t have any energy, and they’re praying for a miracle. If Jesus showed up, He would say, “Get away and quiet yourself. Get some sleep. Start eating better. Take care of yourself.”

Living balanced is the key. You have to take care of all three parts. You will be your most productive, your most effective, when you’re balanced physically, spiritually, and emotionally. If you neglect one area, it will lessen what you could accomplish.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You for giving me my body to live in and to care for as a temple of Your Spirit. Thank You for the example of how Jesus would get away and be refreshed when He was tired. Help me to be wise about taking care of myself and living balanced. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

Inner Rest

Today's Scripture

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28, NIV

When things come against you in your health, your finances, or relationships, it’s easy to get upset and let your mind constantly dwell on the what-ifs. If your mind never rests, if you live wrought up, fighting everything you don’t like, you’re going to be worn out. Your physical body can rest, but inner rest is just as important as outer rest. If you start resting, turning it over to God, He’ll go to work. He sees what’s happening. He knows what wasn’t fair. And the good news is, God already has the solution. He has a way to not just bring you out, but He’s going to make the enemy pay for bringing the trouble. He’s going to bring you out better.

Now do your part. Bring it to Jesus and sit down and rest in faith. Quit worrying and trying to figure it out. There are no logical solutions to some situations. The Scripture says, “Lean not to your own understanding.” It’s okay to take your seat and live from a place of rest, a place of peace, a place of trust.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You that I can come to You and unload all the weight of heaviness, regrets, and difficulties. I could be worried and upset, but I’m going to give it to You, take my seat, and live from a place of rest. I believe that You are bigger than any problem, and You have this covered. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

Strength Through Connection

Today's Scripture

Those who are planted in the house of the LORD shall flourish in the courts of our God. Psalm 92:13, NKJV

California’s magnificent redwood trees can reach heights of 350 feet and live for 2,000 years. They’re incredibly resilient, withstanding strong wind, storms, and pests that take other trees down. What’s interesting is that their roots are only six-to-twelve-feet deep. The only way the shallow roots can hold up these massive trees is that the roots spread out 100 feet and intertwine with other redwoods’ roots. Against the storms, the whole redwood forest is linked together and stands strong.

Storms may be blowing against you today in your health, your finances, a relationship, trying to push you down, telling you it’s never going to work out, that you have too many obstacles. When you’re planted in a community of faith, your faith gets connected with others’ faith. Before long, you have a support system that cannot be shaken. When the storms come, what would have normally blown you over if you were alone can’t move you. You have others who steady you, encourage you, and uphold you. When we’re all connected, together we can’t be defeated. Together we’re powerful.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You for the strength and support system I have when I’m connected to others. Thank You that I can be planted in Your house and that my faith can be joined to others’ faith. Help me to get plugged in and see faith grow and become powerful. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”
