Don’t Settle in What’s Comfortable

Today's Scripture

The ravens brought him bread and meat each morning and evening, and he drank from the brook. But after a while the brook dried up, for there was no rainfall anywhere in the land. 1 Kings 17:6–7, NLT

In order to hide the prophet Elijah from King Ahab, God sent Elijah to a brook where the ravens would feed him and there was water to drink. It was just as God promised, with abundant provision delivered week after week. I’m sure he thought, “It doesn’t get any better than this. God’s favor is on me.” Elijah was comfortable there. But when the brook dried up, God told him to go to the city of Zarephath where a widow would take care of him. He could have been stubborn and said, “No, I’ve been blessed here. I’m staying in what has been working.” The problem was, the provision ceased. He hadn’t run out of favor. It was a necessary ending. God was moving him into a new level of his destiny. It was at Zarephath that Elijah saw some of the greatest miracles recorded in the Scripture.

Don’t fight the things God brings to an end. It’s a necessary ending so you will step into the new thing He has in store—something that’s bigger, better, more rewarding than you can imagine.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You for the times when You hide me from trouble and provide for all my needs. Thank You for the other times when You call me out of my comfort zone and take me where I’ve never gone. I look forward to wherever You want to lead me and whatever You want to do in my life. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

How You Handle Difficulties

Today's Scripture

“But my people would not listen to me; Israel would not submit to me. So I gave them over to their stubborn hearts to follow their own devices.” Psalm 81:11–12, NIV

When the Israelites were out in the desert, rather than grow through the adversities they faced, they didn’t pass the test. They almost immediately became negative and bitter and complained when it wasn’t easy, when it was taking too long, when things weren’t going their way. God had brought them out of slavery, sent plagues on their oppressors, parted the Red Sea, drowned Pharaoh’s army, and provided them with manna every morning to eat. God didn’t do all those amazing things to leave them in the desert, but they said, “Moses, why did you bring us out into the desert to die?” Because they didn’t pass the test, because they never grew, never developed their faith and character, they spent forty years in the desert and never entered the Promised Land.

How you handle difficulties will determine whether you make it into your promised land. God has the good breaks, the right people, and the resources for you, but before that happens you have to prove to Him that you can handle it. Recognize that those are opportunities to come up higher.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You that You are working out Your plan for my life in Your best way, including the difficult times when You test the quality of my faith. Thank You that You are preparing me for the next thing You have for me. Help me to always be faithful to You and pass the test. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

You’re Not Limited by Your Background

Today's Scripture

“Who knows if perhaps you were made queen for just such a time as this?” Esther 4:14, NLT

Most of the greatest leaders in the Bible didn’t come from prominence. Esther was a Jewish orphan girl who had been taken into exile and was living in Persia. All the odds were against her ever doing anything significant, but God caused things to fall into place and she became the queen of King Xerxes. It was not just for her sake, though. She was strategically put there to help save the Israelites from a plot to destroy them.

God is raising up a new generation of Esthers. It’s not going to happen just because of your talent, your ability, or your background. It’s the favor of God. It’s His divine purpose. Your part is to honor Him, to keep Him first place. When you’re being your best where you are, you’re proving to God that He can trust you. When you’re being faithful, determined, developing your skills, and helping others, God will take you higher than you’ve imagined. Stir your faith up, believe big, pray bold prayers, and dream God-sized dreams. He’s going to put you in strategic positions to affect the culture.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You that You are Almighty God and the power of Your favor is working in my life. Thank You for the opportunities You will bring my way to step into ‘such a time as this’ moments and fulfill my purpose. I declare that I will use Your favor to advance Your kingdom. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

Losing Sleep?

Today's Scripture

And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’” Exodus 3:14, NKJV

Are you worrying about something, losing sleep over a situation you can’t control? Who or what can stop our God? Is that trouble at work a problem for Him? Is that sickness stronger than Him? Are those people more powerful than Him? God created and controls the universe. When Moses asked God His name, He said, “My name is I AM.” He was saying, “I am everything you need. I am protection. I am strength. I am healing. I am provision. I am deliverance. I am wisdom. I am favor.” Nothing can stand against our God. When He speaks, worlds come into existence. You are connected to the most powerful force in the universe. He’s working out His purpose for your life.

Quit worrying. Quit focusing on how big your problems are, thinking they’re never going to change. Start focusing on how big your God is. The Most High God is maneuvering things in your favor. He’s moving the wrong people out of the way, lining up good breaks, turning negative situations around. The great I AM is about to show out in your life.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You that You are my great I AM with power that is greater than any need I have. When I face problems that seem overwhelming, help me learn to hold my peace and remain at rest in who You are. I believe that You will work out Your purpose for my life and be right on time. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

Give It Away

Today's Scripture:

“Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap.” Luke 6:38, NIV

None of us has gotten to where we are by ourselves. Somebody encouraged you, taught you, brought you to church, believed in you, took a chance and gave you a position, prayed for you. They were instrumental in you being where you are, so why don’t you reach out and help somebody else? Give away what’s been given to you.

Sometimes we live ingrown, focused on ourselves. We’re grateful, we thank God for what He’s done, but that’s not going to sustain His blessings in our life. The real test is, are you taking the time to encourage someone? Are you going out of your way to be good to people? Are you strengthening others? Here’s the key: As long as you keep the encouragement flowing, being good to people, helping them overcome, comforting them, then the blessings are going to keep coming. The healing is going to keep coming, the joy, the fulfillment, the right people. As you give away what God has given you, as you strengthen others, you will always have the “good measure” you need.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You for being the God of infinite grace who always exceeds my greatest expectations. Thank You that as I give freely of myself to others, You will bless me to the point of overflowing. I declare that I will give away what You have given to me and bless others. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

He Will Fight for You

Today's Scripture

“The LORD your God, who is going before you, will fight for you, as he did for you in Egypt, before your very eyes.” Deuteronomy 1:30, NIV

When God delivered the Israelites from slavery in Egypt, He fought their battles. When He parted the Red Sea, Pharaoh and all of his army knew the Lord was God. As did the Israelites, you may have things that have held you back for a long time. Every voice tells you, “It’s never going to change. You’ll never break the addiction, never get well, never get out of debt.” On your own that may be true. The obstacle is too big, too strong, more powerful. The good news is that the Most High God is going before you to fight your battles. You are stepping into a new season. He’s going to make things happen that you couldn’t make happen. You’re going to have a strength that you didn’t have. Things are going to fall into place. You didn’t have the connections, the odds were against you, but suddenly it’s going to turn around, suddenly you’re going to go to a new level, suddenly you’re going to break the addiction. How could this happen? God is going before you.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You that You are the Almighty God who goes before me and fights for me. Thank You for all the great things You have done for me and for all the victories that You are about to bring me through. I believe that this is a new season of Your favor. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

Get in Agreement

Today's Scripture

When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?” John 5:6, NIV

In John 5, Jesus asked a man who had been disabled for thirty-eight years if he wanted to get well. The answer seemed obvious, but rather than say yes, the man began explaining why it seemed impossible. In one sense, Jesus was saying, “I need your permission to help you. If you’re not in agreement with Me, if you’re giving Me reasons for why it can’t happen, I can’t turn this around.”

You have to give God permission to bless you, permission to free you, permission to promote you. You have to get in agreement with Him. As long as you’re thinking of all the reasons why it’s not going to happen, talking about how impossible it looks, that’s going to keep you where you are. The conditions may not look favorable for it to ever change, but this is what faith is all about. You’re looking at it in the natural, but we serve a supernatural God. Release your faith, expecting His goodness, and He’ll make things happen that you can’t make happen, things that you can’t explain, things that you don’t see coming.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You that with Your calling upon my life comes the power to release any old thinking, old habits, discouragement, and dysfunction that would keep me stuck. I’m dropping the excuses that hold me back and taking steps of faith for a new beginning today. I’m getting in agreement with You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

Walking in Circles

Today's Scripture

Joshua 6:3–5, NLT

“You and your fighting men should march around the town once a day for six days. Seven priests will walk ahead of the Ark, each carrying a ram’s horn. On the seventh day you are to march around the town seven times, with the priests blowing the horns. When you hear the priests give one long blast on the rams’ horns, have all the people shout as loud as they can. Then the walls of the town will collapse.”

The city of Jericho was surrounded by a massive wall made out of brick and stone. There was no way in the natural for the Israelites to conquer the city. Why did God have them walk in circles seven days, doing the same thing over and over? It seemed like a waste of time and energy. He could have brought the walls down on day one. But marching around that city was a test to see if they would be faithful in the routine. Would they trust God and do the right thing when nothing seemed to be changing?

When you’re faithful in the routine, God will make things happen that you couldn’t make happen. You may have been doing the right thing for a long time. You feel like you’re falling behind, you’re being left out. But God sees you being your best even though things are not changing. He sees you doing the right thing even when there’s no growth. Your time is coming. Suddenly those walls are going to come down. Suddenly you’re going to see favor like you’ve never seen.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You that no obstacle is so high and wide that it can withstand Your touch. Thank You that to bring about Your promises in my life You have called me to walk by faith and not by sight. I will live with a sense of expectancy that You are about to bring walls down. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

Let Freedom Ring

Today's Scripture

At last we have freedom, for Christ has set us free! We must always cherish this truth and firmly refuse to go back into the bondage of our past. Galatians 5:1, TPT

Today we celebrate the signing of the Declaration of Independence, which marks July 4, 1776, as the day our Founding Fathers declared our freedom as a nation. What’s interesting is that it wasn’t until 1783 that our nation actually experienced freedom. There were battles raging, but the people were celebrating their decision to fight for freedom. They declared their freedom first, then they stood their ground until they had the victory to live as free men and women.

There may be some opposing forces that you’re fighting today, things that you want to get free from—freedom from an addiction, an anxiety, a lack, a fear. No matter what battle you are facing, let this be the day you declare your freedom, because victory is on the way. You may have to stand and press through for a little while, but know that freedom is yours the day you declare it. Let freedom ring loudly in your life and embrace the victory He has in store for you, for he whom the Son sets free is free indeed!

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You that it was for freedom that Christ set me free, and whom the Son sets free is free indeed. Thank You that I can take my stand on Christ’s finished work on the cross and press through on the freedoms I am battling for. I declare the victory through Christ Jesus. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

Times of Letting Go

Today's Scripture

Then Orpah kissed her mother-in-law goodbye, but Ruth clung to her….Ruth replied, “Don’t urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God.” Ruth 1:14, 16, NIV

Ruth and her sister-in-law, Orpah, both lost their husbands. Their widowed mother-in-law, Naomi, was moving back to her hometown. She told Ruth and Orpah to return to their hometowns and find new husbands, that there was no future in staying with her. Orpah kissed Naomi and moved on. But Ruth refused to leave Naomi and was determined to care for Naomi in spite of what it might cost her. That tells me that if someone is supposed to stay with you, they’ll stick with you through thick and thin. You won’t be able to talk them into leaving. On the other hand, you can’t convince the people to stay who are supposed to leave. When God closes the door in a relationship, you can’t pay them enough, compliment them enough, or treat them good enough. You have to accept that it’s a necessary ending. You enjoyed the time together, but to become who you were created to be, you have to let them go so you can move forward into new relationships, new opportunities, new growth. Trust Him when you don’t understand.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You that You are directing my steps even through the seasons of hurts, questions, and disappointments. Thank You that You bring people into my life and at times You move them out. Help me learn to accept Your sovereign plan, to stay in faith, and to see Your plan unfold. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”
