A Sound Mind

Today's Scripture

For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. 2 Timothy 1:7, NKJV

We all have so many opportunities to live worried, afraid, wondering what’s going to happen. Seeing so much violence, suffering, and division today, many people live with a troubled mind, a worried mind, a doubting mind, a negative mind. They’re on edge, thinking, “What if the economy goes down? What if the violence gets worse? How can I protect my family?” The enemy knows to target our mind with fear, defeat, and uncertainty. He knows if he can control your thoughts, he can control your life.

But the apostle Paul says God has given us a sound mind, a positive mind, a hopeful mind. It’s a mind that’s at peace, that knows God is in control, that He’s ordering your steps. A sound mind is focused on God’s promises, not on problems. It’s looking at how big our God is, not how big the challenge is. A sound mind isn’t discouraged about the bad break; it’s expecting God to open a new door. That’s the way God created us to live—positive, peaceful, trusting. Negativity and fear can’t stay in a mind full of hope and power.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You that You have given me the power to have a sound mind that gives no place for a spirit of fear. Thank You that I can fill my mind with Your promises and the knowledge that You are in control and ordering my steps. Help me to keep the negative thoughts out and walk in peace. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

No More Sour Grapes

Today's Scripture

“What do you people mean by quoting this proverb about the land of Israel: ‘The parents eat sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge’? As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign LORD, you will no longer quote this proverb in Israel.” Ezekiel 18:2–3, NIV

The people God spoke to through the prophet Ezekiel believed that because the parents had addictions or the grandparents were depressed and lived with lack, the children were going to struggle with the same problems. They just accepted that generational problems were passed down and nothing could be done about it. But God said, “Why are you using the excuse that your problems came from your parents, the mistakes they made, or how they raised you? As long as I live, you are not bound by the negatives that were passed down to you.” People in your family line may have eaten the sour grapes, put you at a disadvantage, and passed along hardships that you didn’t choose, but God is about to remove what’s holding you back.

When Jesus declared, “It is finished,” on the cross, that included any generational baggage you inherited. Chains are breaking. God is putting an end to it, once and for all. There’s about to be generational breakthroughs, blessings, freedom, abundance, and joy—not just for you, but for your children and grandchildren. Rise up and say, “Today it ends.”

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You that I don’t have to be defined by my family’s past, by dysfunctions or limitations that were passed down to me. Thank You that I can take a stand and remove anything that is holding me back. I declare that I will be the difference maker who rises up to put it to an end. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

Heaven’s Grandstand

Today's Scripture

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Hebrews 12:1, NIV

If you grew up playing sports, you realize that when your family is in the stands cheering for you, calling your name, you run a little faster and jump a little higher. It gives you greater determination and more stamina. That reminds me of what we’re told in today’s Scripture. It paints the picture of a big stadium in Heaven with a race taking place. In the grandstands looking down, cheering us on, are the heroes of faith described in Hebrews 11—Noah, Abraham, Sarah, Moses, David—who believed and endured, saw Red Seas part, and defeated giants. You’re not running your race alone. All of Heaven, including the believers in your family line who have gone before you, relatives you may not have ever met, are in that great cloud of witnesses, calling out, “You go! Keep running. Keep being your best. You have what it takes.”

Stop and listen. The cheers from Heaven’s grandstand are for you. This is your time to shine. Run with purpose. Run with excellence. Make them proud.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You for the heroes of faith whose lives help show me how to live for You and who are cheering me on from Heaven today. Thank You for their messages of perseverance and overcoming hardships. Help me to run my race with purpose and strength. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

Fly Together

Today's Scripture

And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near. Hebrews 10:25, NLT

It’s easy to do life on our own and think we don’t need any help. But you won’t reach your highest potential by yourself. God has ordained people to help strengthen you, to encourage you, to push you toward your purpose. Over thirty times in the Scripture, it says “one another.” “Love one another, encourage one another, serve one another, comfort one another.” You need others around you. Don’t isolate yourself and think, “Well, I’m strong enough. I’m tough enough. I’m talented enough.” You may be for what you have in mind, but not for what God has in mind. He has something bigger, something more rewarding, that you can’t do by yourself.

Are you flying solo? Or do you have a community of faith? Are people flying with you, watching over you, encouraging you, inspiring you? There’s power in connectivity. Others’ faith makes you stronger. Their praise helps you fight your battles. Their joy gives you joy. It’s not only refueling you, but your faith is helping others. You won’t become all you were created to be without the right people around you.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You that You ordained me to be in a community of faith so that my faith can be joined to others’ faith. Thank You that there is a power released when I’m connected to others that gives strength to fight my battles. Help me to fly together with other believers. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

Faithful in Little Things

Today's Scripture

“If you are faithful in little things, you will be faithful in large ones. But if you are dishonest in little things, you won’t be honest with greater responsibilities.” Luke 16:10, NLT

One of the tests we have to pass is being faithful when nothing is changing, doing our best when it’s not improving, being good to people who are not being good to us. It’s easy to get frustrated and say, “God, why isn’t this working?” Instead of getting discouraged and trying to force things to happen, be faithful and keep being your best. God is watching you. He sees your faithfulness. He sees you taking the high road, doing the right thing when it’s hard. At the appointed time, in your due season, God is going to catapult you further than you can imagine. You’re being prepared for “larger” things. God is getting you ready. Everything you’ve been through has deposited something in you. The delays and struggles have made you stronger.

If someone walks away, doesn’t support you, doesn’t encourage you, you won’t get bitter or slack off. You stay in peace. You stay faithful. Then get ready. God has something bigger than you think, more rewarding than you’ve imagined. He’s going to exceed your expectations.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You that Jesus humbled Himself, came to earth, and became a servant that He might redeem us. Help me to humble myself and serve others as He did. Thank You for Your promise that if I am faithful in the small things, You will trust me with more. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

Start Thinking Like a Son

Today's Scripture

So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children. Now we call him, “Abba, Father.” Romans 8:15, NLT

Are you living like a child of God, knowing that you have rights of sonship, knowing that God is pleased with you, that He is longing to be good to you, that “it is the Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom”? Or are you living like a slave, feeling unworthy, like you don’t deserve God’s goodness? Why don’t you start believing that you’re His child? You’re already in the family.

Even though the enemy has been taken care of, even though the oppressor is defeated, he will work overtime trying to remind you of all your mistakes, making you feel guilty and unworthy. He’ll still whisper lies. “You’re not supposed to be blessed. You’ll always be addicted.” What he’s really saying is, “You’re a slave. Just accept it.” Tell him, “No, you have the wrong person. I’m not a slave; I’m a son. I’m blessed, I’m prosperous, and I’m a difference maker.” You’re not going to qualify as a son when you perform well enough. You’re a son right now. Get rid of that slave mentality and start having an abundant mentality.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You that You have not only freed me from sin and guilt, but You have defeated the enemy. Thank You that I am not a slave but I am Your child. I believe that I don’t have to perform well enough to qualify but that I am Your child now. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

It’s What’s Happening Inside

Today's Scripture

About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. Acts 16:25, NIV

In Acts 16, Paul and Silas had been beaten with rods and thrown in prison for preaching in the city of Philippi. Rather than complaining or being worried about whether they might receive justice, they were at peace and worshipping God with their feet fastened to stocks.

Our outside circumstances don’t determine our peace; it’s what’s happening inside. When you face difficulties and you’re connected to your Creator, when you’ve learned to pray with humility and thanksgiving, you can say with Paul, “I have some troubles, but I’m in peace. I’m in the hospital, but I’m in peace. I’m in debt, and my business is struggling, but I’m in peace. I know God is fighting this battle. I know He has the final say.” That’s when you’ll experience peace that passes understanding. Peace where you can sleep in the storm and through the battles. When you’re in peace, you’re showing God that you trust Him. That’s your faith at work. That’s what activates His power. You’ll see Him show out in your life—supernatural healing, supernatural provision, supernatural breakthroughs.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You that You, the all-powerful Creator of the universe, are with me, just as You were with Paul and Silas. In the difficult times, when I don’t know how a situation is going to turn out, help me to offer You a sacrifice of praise. I believe You will work out Your plan for me. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

Awestruck

Today's Scripture

For he was awestruck by the number of fish they had caught, as were the others with him. Luke 5:9, NLT

Even though Peter and his partners had fished all night and caught nothing, when they obeyed Jesus and let down their nets again, the fish flowed into their nets to the breaking point. It was a near boat-sinking blessing. When Peter saw how many fish were in his nets, he was awestruck and began to worship Jesus. It set Peter on a path to become a fisher of men.

God is going to do some things that leave you awestruck. You may have thought you’d be paying off your house for thirty years, but suddenly a contract, a good break, a net-breaking blessing, and you’re into overflow. The fish came looking for you. You don’t have to see how it will happen. Leave the how up to God. Just believe that it will happen. If you get stuck on the how, you’ll talk yourself out of it. Your mind will come up with a thousand reasons why it’s not going to happen. God’s ways are not our ways. He has ways you’ve never thought of.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You that You are the God who spoke worlds into existence, and You know how to bring boat-sinking blessings to my net. Help me to start taking steps of faith that open the door to Your favor. I’m going to keep believing Your Word and casting my net. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

Night Seasons

Today's Scripture

“…say to her, ‘Is all well with you? Is all well with your husband? Is all well with the child?’” And she answered, “All is well.” 2 Kings 4:26, ESV

In what feels like a night season, it’s easy to talk about the difficulties and magnify our problems. All that’s going to do is make you more discouraged and take your joy. Instead of complaining, one of the best things you can say is, “All is well.” When you say, “All is well,” you’re really saying, “God is still on the throne, and I’m not going to live upset, bitter, and guilty.” You can say it because you know the night season is temporary. You know joy is coming. It’s going to happen suddenly, unexpectedly; you won’t see it coming. You woke up, and it was still dark. Nothing had changed, but suddenly you get the break you need. Suddenly your health turns around. Suddenly you meet the right person. The light comes bursting in. Now, don’t talk yourself into being miserable. Keep a report of victory coming out of your mouth. Every day that you stay in faith and keep a good attitude despite the darkness, you’re passing the test. Talk about God’s greatness, talk about His favor. God is saying, “All is well.”

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You that You are the God of the night seasons. I believe that no matter what comes my way, it’s not a surprise to You, and You still have me in the palms of Your hands. I believe that though it may be night now, morning is coming. All is well. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

In the Pits

Today's Scripture

So it came to pass, when Joseph had come to his brothers, that they stripped Joseph of his tunic, the tunic of many colors that was on him. Then they took him and cast him into a pit. And the pit was empty; there was no water in it. Genesis 37:23–24, NKJV

When you’re in the pits, it’s tempting to have a pity party. “Why did this happen to me? How could this go so wrong?” You’re right where Joseph was, so hated by his brothers that they threw him in a pit to die. You did the right thing, but the wrong thing happened. You can either get sour and bitter, or you can do what he did and trust God in the pit.

We’re not going to understand everything God is doing. There are difficult times when a pit has been ordained by God. His plan for Joseph’s life was to rule the nation of Egypt. The pit was ordained to get him to Egypt and led to other difficult situations before he finally became prime minister. Sometimes life won’t make sense. In fact, He says, “My ways are not your ways.” You’re doing the right thing, but it hasn’t worked out. You have to trust that God is still in control, that He knows what He’s doing. He’s already planned the end from the beginning. This is what faith is all about.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You that the pits I find myself in are only temporary stops along the way to my final destination. Thank You that I can offer You a sacrifice of praise because You hold victory in store for me. I believe that You’ll get me to where I’m supposed to be. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”
