Far and Beyond

Today's Scripture

“I will bless her and will surely give you a son by her. I will bless her so that she will be the mother of nations; kings of peoples will come from her.” Genesis 17:16, NIV

God loves to do things far and beyond what we can accomplish. In Sarah’s case, at the age of eighty-nine, having been barren all this time, she was promised to not only give Abraham a son but that kings would come through her. Here she was doubting, discouraged, thinking there was no way. But God was saying, “Sarah, you’ve been through disappointments, but you have something you can’t see now that is bigger than you can imagine—nations and kings are going to come from you.”

You may have gone through some difficult years, things haven’t worked out, and now thoughts tell you that you’ll never accomplish the dream, never meet the right person, never get well. Don’t believe those lies. There are things you can’t see right now that are shut up in your destiny—healing, promotion, children, businesses, abundance. At the right time, as with Sarah, you’re going to step into that destiny moment when God releases what’s been shut up, defies the odds, and does what people can’t explain. God is about to do what only He can do.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You for the dreams, the promises, the potential, the seeds of greatness that You put inside me. Thank You that You set me up for things that are bigger and better and more fulfilling than I can imagine. I believe I will give birth to my dreams. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

Trust When You Don’t Understand

Today's Scripture

Your faithfulness extends to every generation, like the earth you created; it endures by your decree, for everything serves your plans. Psalm 119:91, TLB

We’re not going to understand everything that happens in life. There will be detours, delays, dead ends, and times when it looks as though we’re stuck. It’s easy to get discouraged when our plans don’t work out, a door closes, someone does us wrong. We take one step forward, then two steps back. But God doesn’t always take us in a straight line. The Scripture says, “Everything serves His plan.” It’s not just the good breaks, the times you’re promoted, seeing favor, but even the closed doors, the relationship breaks, the setbacks. It doesn’t make sense to us, but God has a master plan. He sees what we can’t see. Sometimes He takes you backward so He can move you forward. He closes doors to force us to change. We’re comfortable where we were, but God has something greater, something we’ve never imagined. He uses trouble as transportation to propel you to a new level of your destiny. The question is, Will you trust Him in the trouble? Will you stay in peace when you don’t understand what’s happening?

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You that You are able to make all things serve me for my good, even the negative things that stress me out and seem to be holding me back. Thank You that I can stay in peace and trust when I don’t understand. I believe that You are working out Your plan for my life. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

A Habit of Forgiveness

Today's Scripture

Forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. Colossians 3:13, NIV

If you study the life of David, you know that he became an expert at forgiving others, at letting things go. He felt the sting of rejection of his father. When his oldest brother belittled him in front of others, the Scripture says, “David turned and walked away.” Even after King Saul tried to kill him and David could have taken revenge, he forgave Saul, let it go, and moved forward into his destiny.

It’s easy to hold on to offenses, to what someone said, to how they treated us, and let that cause us to be sour, angry, and bitter. It becomes a poison that contaminates our life. The Scripture says we have to develop a habit of forgiving daily, of living with this perpetual forgiveness. We forgive others as the Lord has forgiven us. We forgive so we can be free. We forgive so we can reach our full potential. When an offense comes, we don’t let it in; we give it to God and let it go. When you release it, you’ll step into new levels of freedom, joy, and victory.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You that You have forgiven me and cleansed away the poison of my own sins. Thank You that I can do the same with others and not allow what’s passed to poison and contaminate me. I declare that I will forgive daily, forgive perpetually, and move forward with my destiny. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

Troublemakers

Today's Scripture

Friends of troublemakers disgrace their parents. Proverbs 28:7, NCV

Whether you think it’s true or not, the quality and character of your friends is having a great impact on your life. Are you hanging out with any troublemakers? By that I mean people who are dragging you down, not adding value to your life, not inspiring you to reach your dreams. For instance, you shouldn’t go to lunch regularly with coworkers who gossip, complain, and talk badly about others. Don’t keep meeting with the same people who cause you to compromise year after year. Don’t associate with someone who disrespects their spouse and puts down their family members. If your friend has an anger problem, it will rub off on you and you’ll become hot-tempered. No disrespect, but they are troublemakers. You are better than that, and you don’t need the poison they share.

What you’re unwilling to walk away from is where you’ll get stuck. So on a regular basis evaluate your friendships. Make sure you’re hanging around people who inspire you and make you better. If you will let go of the wrong people, God will bring you the right people.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You for the friends in my life who inspire me, challenge me, and make me better. Help me to be wise about whom I spend my time with and to know the friendships I need to distance myself from. I want to walk with the right people. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

Something Sacred

Today's Scripture

Then Samson prayed to the LORD, “Sovereign LORD, remember me again. O God, please strengthen me just one more time. With one blow let me pay back the Philistines for the loss of my two eyes.” Judges 16:28, NLT

Samson’s birth was prophesied. He was called to deliver his people before his birth. He was given supernatural strength, something sacred. He knew God’s hand was on him, but he started hanging around the wrong people. Instead of protecting and using what God had entrusted him with, he didn’t take seriously what God had given him and compromised. He played around with his talent and potential, and he eventually lost it. This once powerful man, who was prophesied to do great things, ended up blinded and chained by enemies. Yet even though he mishandled his calling, God gave him another chance, giving him the strength to push the middle pillars of a temple, collapsing the building and killing more enemies in his death than he had during his lifetime.

If you don’t see what God has given you as valuable, as sacred, you’ll end up mishandling it. Protect His calling on your life—your marriage, your children, your career. And if you’ve let it slip, God is giving you another chance. Answer His call today. He’s about to do something amazing in your life.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You for the destiny that You have called me to fulfill. Thank You that You have redeemed me and that Your mercies cover my mistakes and failures. I’m going to keep moving forward knowing that You always have another ‘one more time’ for me. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

Recognize the Source

Today's Scripture

“You are to purposely slip out for her some grain from the bundles and leave it so that she may glean.” Ruth 2:16, NASB

Ruth and her mother-in-law, Naomi, were both widows, very poor, struggling to survive. Ruth went into the harvest fields every morning to pick up grain that the workers missed. Boaz, the owner of the field, was told how she was providing for Naomi. He told his workers to purposely leave handfuls of grain for Ruth to easily glean. Eventually, Ruth found out it was him and I can hear her telling Naomi, “Boaz is leaving me so much extra grain. He’s showing me favor.” But the truth is, it was God being good to her. Boaz was the resource, but God was the source. God was causing Boaz to want to be good to her.

Every good gift comes from our Father in heaven. Be thankful for all the resources He uses, but recognize and be constantly thankful that He is your source. He opened the door you couldn’t open, had somebody decide to give you a good break, got you in the right place at the right time. The more you acknowledge God’s goodness, the more of His goodness you will see.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You that You are my source. You are constantly working, constantly showing me Your goodness, with every good gift that comes into my life. I want to live today with an attitude of thankfulness and gratefulness. I will not take Your goodness for granted. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

Through the Valleys

Today's Scripture

I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:14, ESV

In Psalm 23, David said, “I walk through the darkest valley.” He didn’t say, “I set up camp in the valley and stay there.” He said, in effect, “The valley is not my home; the throne is. I don’t settle in the middle because I’m a shepherd boy and don’t have the skills, the connections, or the training to become king. I don’t give up when it’s hard, when life’s not fair, when it’s taking a long time. I have faith for the middle.”

God is not dependent on what you don’t have. When He breathed His life into you, He equipped you with everything you need. When things come against you, and you’re tempted to settle, you have to dig your heels in and say as David said, “God is the God of the middle. Even though I may not understand it, I’m not going to get stuck in the valley. I’m going to keep moving forward, knowing that God is in control and the difficulties are just steps on the way to the prize of the upward call of God in my life.”

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You that You are not just the God of the start of my journey, not just the God of my finish, but You are also the God of the middle. Thank You that You are here to help me through the valleys. I declare that no difficulty will keep me from Your upward call. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

Led by the Spirit

Today's Scripture

Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. Luke 4:1–2, NIV

You would think that as Jesus was about to start His ministry, being full of the Holy Spirit, God would send Him to Jerusalem where He’d hold big meetings and do miracles, or to the synagogues to teach the multitudes. But the Scripture says that the Spirit led Jesus into the wilderness to be tempted.

You can be in the barren wilderness and be in God’s will. You can be in the hot desert by design. The Spirit led you there. You know you have God’s favor, you know He’s put big things in your heart, but you’re in a dry place. You’re not seeing any growth, doors aren’t opening, and the opposition is stronger than ever. You could get discouraged and complain. This is when you have to dig down deep and say, “God, I trust You. You led me here. I know I’m in this desert to pass this test, to stand strong and have my character strengthened.” If you have the right attitude, you’ll come out stronger, with greater confidence, greater courage, greater faith. You’ll come out of the dry place into an abundant place.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You that my life is in Your hands, and Your Spirit leads me. Thank You for the silent seasons, the desert places, for the times of testing when I don’t always understand where You’re taking me. I trust You to take me through the desert into something bigger for my future. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

Prepared Blessings

Today's Scripture

We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised. Hebrews 6:12, NIV

It’s easy to be frustrated when something we’re waiting for is taking so much longer than we thought. It’s tempting to take matters into our own hands and try to force doors to open, to manipulate a situation, to live striving and straining. But the Scripture says that it is through faith and patience we inherit the promises. You have to trust God’s timing. Without patience, you can miss God’s best. It may be taking longer because what God has in store is much better than what you have in mind.

Jesus told His disciples, “I’m going away to prepare a place for you” (John 14:2). God has some prepared blessings for you, things He’s already lined up—good breaks, the right people, healing—that will come at His appointed time. Isaiah 40:31 says, “They that wait on the Lord will renew their strength.” Waiting on the Lord is waiting in faith, in peace, from a place of rest. You do your best, then you step back and let God fight your battles, open the doors, bring the right people, vindicate you.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You that You have established set times to bring Your promises to pass in my life. Give me the grace to accept Your timing and rest in the fact that You have prepared blessings for me. I will do my best and then wait in faith, in peace, and rest in You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

Forgive

Today's Scripture

When Joseph’s brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, “What if Joseph holds a grudge against us and pays us back for all the wrongs we did to him?” ... But Joseph said to them, “Don’t be afraid. Am I in the place of God?” Genesis 50:15, 19, NIV

Think about Joseph. Because of his brothers’ betrayal, Joseph spent thirteen years in slavery and prison in a foreign land. One day, after Joseph was made the prime minister of Egypt, the brothers stood before him trying to buy food in a famine. This was his chance to take revenge. These brothers had taken his freedom and were responsible for him losing years of his life, being away from his family, not following his dream. In a sense, he had a right to get even, but Joseph had already learned that he needed to forgive people who didn’t deserve it. He forgave the people who tried to ruin his life. Because Joseph showed God that He could trust him to do the hard thing, to forgive and be good to people who weren’t good to him, God poured out blessings upon him. He put Joseph in charge of the whole nation. When you do what God is asking you to do when it’s hard, when it’s not fair, when it doesn’t make sense, there’s no limit to how high God will take you.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You for showing me Your mercy, Your kindness, and Your goodness over and over when I didn’t begin to deserve it. Help me to have a heart that is free from seeking revenge and getting even. Help me to forgive and to do good to those who have done me wrong. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”
