Refuse to Be a Victim

Today's Scripture

The LORD is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble. Psalm 9:9, NIV

We all go through unfair things, hurts, offenses, and bad breaks. The question is, Are you going to be a victim or a victor? The enemy will try to convince you to be the forever victim who lives bitter and in self-pity, always giving you a reason to not move forward. “You weren’t raised right. Your teachers put you down. You have an illness. You lost a loved one.” But that will keep you stuck in the pain because you’re giving the enemy permission to keep you defeated.

Being the victor starts in your thinking. You have to make God your refuge and stronghold. Refuse to play the role of a victim; don’t give way to self-pity and bitterness. What happened to you is not who you are. It may have been meant for your harm, but if you give it to God, He’s going to turn it to your advantage. If you turn it over to Him, you’ll find the strength to live out of a place of wholeness, freedom, and victory. It’s going to catapult you to where you can’t go on your own.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You that You are my refuge and stronghold in times of trouble. Thank You for Your love and that I am Your child, a victor and not a victim of circumstances. I’m going to stay in peace knowing that You are going to turn things around to my advantage. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

Something More Powerful

Today's Scripture

Then the LORD said to me, “Go and love your wife again, even though she commits adultery with another lover. This will illustrate that the LORD still loves Israel, even though the people have turned to other gods and love to worship them.” So I bought her back for fifteen pieces of silver. Hosea 3:1–2, NLT

After Hosea’s wife had abandoned him and their children, she ended up as a slave to one of her lovers. Despite all the heartbreak and humiliation that her unfaithfulness had caused, God told Hosea to go after her and love her again. Others only saw a prostitute who had made a terrible mess of her life, but inside there was a daughter of the Most High God, a person of destiny who was made in the image of God. She just needed a Hosea to run after her, buy her back, and love her.

Be a Hosea and run after the hurting, go after the broken, the addicted, those who have messed up. Where they are is their own fault, but it doesn’t help to point your finger and tell them what they’re doing wrong. Go after them with something more powerful—with love, with mercy, with the goodness of God—and help them back. They don’t deserve it, but none of us did. While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. You’ve been shown incredible mercy, so show that mercy to others.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You for being rich in mercy and never giving up on me when I’ve gone my own way and failed. I want to love the people You have placed in my life as You do. Help me to be like Hosea, full of grace and mercy to help lift the fallen and restore them to wholeness. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

When Eliab Shows Up

Today's Scripture

But when David’s oldest brother, Eliab, heard David talking to the men, he was angry. “What are you doing around here anyway?” he demanded. “What about those few sheep you’re supposed to be taking care of? I know about your pride and deceit. You just want to see the battle!” 1 Samuel 17:28, NLT

When David’s brother Eliab overheard him talking to other soldiers about stepping up and facing Goliath, he immediately treated David with disrespect in front of them, speaking condescendingly and making false accusations. When God puts big things in your heart, don’t expect all your family and friends to encourage you and cheer you on. That’s when the Eliabs show up and cast negative seeds, trying to get you to doubt, to second-guess yourself, to discredit you and make you feel small, as though you don’t measure up. Don’t let those seeds take root.

People don’t determine your destiny. God does. When He called you, He didn’t consult with your friends, your neighbors, your boss, or your family to decide if they think you can do it. Don’t get upset with them if they think you can’t do it. They’re looking at the outside. They’re judging from a human point of view, but God has put things in you that will defy the odds. His favor on your life will cause you to go places you could never go on your own.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You that You are not limited to seeing me as other people see me. Thank You that You see my heart, and You have qualified me to do what You want me to do. I declare that I will not allow how others treat me or what they say to determine my value and self-worth. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

Naysayers

Today's Scripture

While he was still talking to her, messengers arrived from Jairus’s home with the news that it was too late—his daughter was dead and there was no point in Jesus’ coming now. But Jesus ignored their comments and said to Jairus, “Don’t be afraid. Just trust me.” Mark 5:35–36, TLB

Jesus told Jairus that He was going to go to his house to pray for his daughter who was very sick, but Jesus got delayed. When He heard the negative report that the girl had died, He didn’t pay any attention to it. He didn’t dwell on it. He didn’t let the doubt and negativity get in His spirit. Rather, He went and raised the little girl from the dead.

When you’re believing for your healing, believing for a promise from God, be selective what you dwell on and who you spend time with. There are going to be plenty of naysayers and doubters. They are dream stealers, people who will tell you all the reasons it’s not going to work out. “My cousin died of what you have.” Let that go in one ear and out the other. When you’re fighting a battle, you don’t need to be around negative, defeated, “can’t do it” people. That’s going to talk you out of it. You need dream releasers, people who encourage you, believe with you, and build up your faith, not tear it down.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You that no matter what happens in my life, no matter what seems delayed, You have the final say. Thank You that I can get my hopes up and choose to not dwell on negative reports. Help me to ignore the dream stealers and doubters and stay close to my dream releasers. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

Upstream Blessings

Today's Scripture

“As soon as the priests who carry the ark of the LORD—the Lord of all the earth—set foot in the Jordan, its waters flowing downstream will be cut off and stand up in a heap.” Joshua 3:13, NIV

Two million Israelites were waiting to cross the flooded Jordan River to enter the Promised Land. But the Jordan’s strong current was overflowing its banks. There was no way to cross. God told Joshua to tell the priests to carry the Ark of the Covenant, which represented the presence of God, and to walk into the river. The Israelites were watching with great anticipation, believing the waters would miraculously part as the Red Sea had forty years before. But when the priests’ feet touched the water, nothing happened. Everything looked just the same. Why?

What they couldn’t see yet was that God had stopped the flow of water twenty miles upstream, and the Israelites simply had to wait in faith to see the upstream blessing. Like with them, what you’ve been praying about is on the way, but don’t let what’s happening downstream talk you out of what God has done upstream. You can’t see it yet, but He’s already dammed up the worries, stopped the sickness, broken the addiction. Walk by faith and not by sight. Those waters are about to recede.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You for the promise that You will part my Jordan River when I step into the water. When things look impossible, I know that You want me to be bold and keep taking steps of obedience, to keep praying and expecting. I believe I’m going to see miracles along the way. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

What Really Matters

Today's Scripture

“Ignore insignificant insults or losses and do not bother to retaliate—maintain your dignity.” Luke 6:29, AMP

The enemy would love to get us so distracted that we start fighting battles that don’t matter. You don’t have time to waste responding to people who throw insults at you, who are never going to be for you, who are determined to misunderstand you. They don’t like the favor on your life. They don’t like the fact that you’re happy, you’re blessed, you’re successful. Don’t spend your valuable time trying to retaliate. The enemy wouldn’t be having them trying to tear down your dignity if he didn’t know you were a world changer, a history maker, a giant killer. Ignore the insults. Don’t read the negative comments. Don’t dwell on what they say. Leave it alone. If you try to straighten everyone out and convince every critic to change their mind, to make them like you, you won’t have the energy, the strength, the creativity, and the anointing to do what God has called you to do. Let God deal with them. Life is too short, your time too valuable, and your assignment too important to spend it on things that don’t matter.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You that You are always greater than any difficulty I will ever face. Give me the wisdom to discern and ignore anything that is just an insignificant insult or distraction to get me off track. I believe that You are going to help me focus on what really matters. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

A Masterpiece Never Makes Itself

Today's Scripture

For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. Ephesians 2:10, NLT

It’s interesting that a masterpiece never makes itself. Without da Vinci, there is no Mona Lisa painting—just another painted canvas, no big deal. Without Michelangelo, there is no statue of David—just another big slab of marble that others thought was nothing special. The difference was the maker. The good news is that your maker is the Most High God. It’s not up to you to become a masterpiece; that’s His job. You don’t have to strive, perform, and live under pressure. You can relax, knowing that you’re a masterpiece in the making.

You have some flaws, some areas where you need to improve. You’re not finished. The master is still at work. Don’t get discouraged while you’re being changed. Your divine designer knows exactly what you need, when you need it, and where you need it. What looks like a mistake or a flaw to us is not to Him. When He has added some more strokes, more color, more definition, more shadowing, it begins to make sense. When it all comes together, you will become the masterpiece God created you to be.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You that You created me as a masterpiece, down to the smallest detail of what I would need to fulfill Your plan for my life. Thank You that You’re working in my life, and You will bring me to completion. I am looking beyond the messy areas to see the masterpiece in the making. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

What You Can’t Calculate

Today's Scripture

Trust GOD from the bottom of your heart; don’t try to figure out everything on your own. Proverbs 3:5, MSG

We look at our lives in the natural. “If I save, get the promotion, and have no setbacks, I should be out of debt in ten years.” It’s good to be wise and plan and do all you can. But here’s a key: Our God is supernatural, and you can’t calculate His goodness. You can’t quantify His blessings, His increase, His favor. There are things He has already planned for you that are out of the ordinary. That’s why the Scripture says to trust Him with all your heart and lean not to your own understanding. It may look like it’s going to take forever, but this is where faith comes in. What you can’t see is that God has some fast-forward moments that defy the odds, acceleration you didn’t see coming, good breaks that will catapult you ahead.

Be grateful for where you are, stay faithful, but get ready. What looks like it is way off is going to happen sooner than you think. Your time is on God’s schedule. You’re going to see the God of acceleration shooting you into your destiny.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You that You are my God and that You are ordering my steps. Thank You that I can be free from trying to figure everything out on my own. I declare that I am in the palm of Your hand, and I am going to trust You from the bottom of my heart. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

Activate the Flow

Today's Scripture

For she kept saying, If I only touch His garments, I shall be restored to health. Mark 5:28, AMPC

In Mark 5, there was a lady who had a bleeding disorder for twelve years. She had spent all her money on the best doctors but was told her illness was untreatable. One day she heard that Jesus was passing through her town, and something came alive. Her faith rose up. She left her house determined to push through the crowds and push through her doubts and get to Jesus. She kept saying that if she touched His garments, her health would be restored. She reached out, touched the edge of His robe, and was healed. Jesus looked at her and said, “Daughter, your faith has made you well. Your faith activated this flow of healing.”

I wonder if there are some divine flows you’re missing out on because you’re not activating them. You’re brushing up against Jesus so to speak, but you’re not touching Him. You have to stretch your faith, press past the doubts, press past the naysayers who tell you what you can’t become, how you won’t get well. You have to press past the negative chatter and activate the flow.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You that my faith and expectancy can activate a supernatural flow where You do amazing things. Thank You that I can reach out and touch You by faith today. I believe that You are making a way, that things are changing in my favor, and that victory will be mine. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

Live Unoffended

Today's Scripture

“Even if that person wrongs you seven times a day and each time turns again and asks forgiveness, you must forgive.” Luke 17:4, NLT

In Luke 17, Jesus was preparing His disciples to go out and do great things. He could have taught them about having more faith for bigger impact, but He said, “Offenses will surely come.” He was saying, “As you go through life, offenses will come your way from rude coworkers, family members who don’t believe in you, and friends who walk away.” Jesus gave them this somber news, then He gave them the solution. “If your brother wrongs you seven times a day, forgive them. Live unoffended.”

What He is talking about is continual forgiveness. He’s saying that you can’t let offenses come in and poison your spirit. You have to deal with the hurt quickly. The longer you wait, the more difficult it is to release it. If you dwell on it for a day, think about it for a month, it’ll get bigger and become more hurtful. You’ll be sour, short with people, irritable, and not enjoy your family. That could have all been avoided if you would have forgiven quickly. Don’t let offenses take root and contaminate your life.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You that I can guard my heart and keep it free from all the negative things that try to bait me to let them enter in. I declare that I will not allow offenses to get inside and make me upset and bitter. I declare that I will live unoffended and continually forgive. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”
