Tomorrow morning there is a committee hearing at 8:00 am at the Capitol 3rd floor on a Bill introduced today to pay claims of the LNFF remaining survivors. Anybody that can be there to support would be a great help. Fingers crossed.

State Senate committee approves $17.6 million payment for Lower North Fork Fire victims
There was not total support to pass this when the hearing began, but after hearing from Scott Appel, Sam Lucas and some neighbors who already settled there was not a dry eye. It passed unanimously... Won't be final until last reading on Wed and Gov. signature but looks good for passage. Thank you again for all your support.
What a nightmare the Lower North Fork Fire has been and even bigger nightmare to have to work with our State Government. Thank you Kuehster residents for your tenacity in this long drawn out battle. May this chapter be over soon.
DENVER (AP) — Victims of a 2012 Colorado wildfire started by the state will receive about $18 million in liability payments with a bill that's been signed into law.
The legislation signed into law Friday by Gov. John Hickenlooper identifies nearly two dozen parties with outstanding claims from the Lower North Fork Fire.

Soon after Governor Hickenlooper signed SB-223 into law, I toured the Lower North Fork Area with Joe Duda and Collin Wassink. Joe Duda is a Deputy State Forester for Colorado State Forest Service, and Collin Wassink was the CSFS Project Manager on the Lower North Fork recovery project. I was able to see firsthand how the $1.3 million that Governor Hickenlooper designated to the recovery project in October of 2012 had been used to restore the Lower North Fork fire area. Beginning in August of 2012, multiple meetings were held with landowners to discuss project options, cost estimates, and representative treatments. Based on the input of the wildfire victims, the project focused on:
The removal of burned/dead/hazardous trees within 200 feet of roadways, driveways, and access/main roads
Decreasing vegetative density to aid in faster recovery of burn areas
Promoting regeneration of native vegetation
Decreasing the risk posed by hazardous trees to people nearby
Utilization of any and all merchantable material removed during the recovery
The contractor was able to work with landowners either to remove cut trees and logs from the property, or to leave them on site for future use. More than 30 properties were included in the project. A total of 142 loads of logs and 121 loads of chips were removed; 91 loads of the logs were delivered to landowners.

Forgot to post this when it was announced 4 days ago. Finally, some closure. The Denver Channel, and Marshall Zellinger in particular, did a fantastic job staying on top of the story and not letting up on pressure on our state - kudos to them. Thanks also to the legislators, Senate Minority Leader Cadman (R-Colorado Springs), Sen. Jeanne Nicholson (D-Gilpin County), Rep. Dave Young, (D-Greeley) and Rep. Cheri Gerou (R-Evergreen) for drafting/sponsoring the legislation for their compensation and continuing to fight for the Lower North Fork Fire survivors and families of the victims.
DENVER - More than two years after a fire started by state workers got out of control and burned 22 homes and took the lives of three people, the families affected the by Lower North Fork Fire are getting settlement checks from the state of Colorado.
The Colorado State Senate Majority Office said checks went to the victims Monday.
The payments covered losses that were not covered by insurance, such as charred landed, burned trees and trees that need to be cut down and replanted. The total also includes interest and economic losses for emotional distress and the deaths of Ann Appel and Sam and Linda Lucas.

It will never make up for the horrendous losses. Thank you for your persistence and making the appropriate parties accountable so that something like this never happens again.
