41 Percent of Pregnancies in New York City Are Aborted

New York City's abortion rate is 41 percent, more than double the national average, according to city health department statistics. The figures spurred a meeting of Christian and Jewish leaders in Manhattan, including the archbishop of New York, Timothy Dolan, who called for a reduction in the number of aborted pregnancies.

"We gotta do more than shiver over these chilling statistics," Dolan said at a press conference Thursday. "I invite all to come together to make abortion rare."

New York Catholic Archbishop Timothy Dolan speaks about recent New York City Health Department statistics revealing that 41 percent of pregnancies in the city result in abortion, during a press conference. In 2009, women in New York City terminated 87,273 pregnancies, according to data released last month. Black women had the highest rate of abortion by far, followed by Hispanics, white women and Asians. The national abortion rate is 19 percent.

If you subtract the number of induced abortions by non-residents and unknown residential origin, the rate is actually 35%. National figures (from May 2010, these NYC figures are from 2009) are at 22%. So it's 13% higher, and not as startling when taken in that context. The rates have also declined for the last decade. It's still too high a rate and more needs to be done to improve education and access to birth control.

Here's the actual report: http://radioviceonline.com/wp-content/u ... report.pdf

"Now, more than ever, the illusions of division threaten our very existence. We all know the truth: more connects us than separates us. But in times of crisis the wise build bridges, while the foolish build barriers. We must find a way to look after one another as if we were one single tribe.” -King T'Challa, Black Panther

The truth is incontrovertible. Malice may attack it. ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is. ~Winston Churchill

How about making spreading your legs illegal, while you are at it?

It seems to be a ridiculous concept since sexual relations have been around since the beginning. Education doesn't seem to help, definitely in our over funded educational system. It seems to me that Home Schooling and Charter schools are more the answer than powerful educational Lobbies like the NEA have been or ever will be.

How about forced vasectomies for all unmarried males, while we're at it? If they aren't married, they shouldn't be dipping their wicks, now should they?

Men bad!!! And women are victims. Stimulus/response thinking there LJ. It seems that more women are against abortion than men - maybe it's that inequality to opt out of being a parent.

1. 29.5% (2032 out of 6892) of men under-30 are against abortion. This compares to 36.6% (1392 out of 3800) of women under-30, who are against abortion.

Until you get past thinking your are ruled by men, you will be ruled by men..... :Koolaid:

A male birth control pill would be a good step in the right direction.

Women rejecting responsibility for their actions. Wonderful.

Back in the 60s the great reducer of unwanted pregnancies was going to be education. Girls continued to become pregnant. Since then the answer has been more education and more education. OK girls now know what makes them pregnant but does that stop the flow of hormones? Many times the thought of pregnancy is a turn on for the unmarried girl. How is education going to overcome this?

Education is not the answer. Women accepting responsibility for their reproductive actions is the answer. Why blame men? Stop being the poor helpless victim. And stop making the unborn child the victim by mudering him/her.
