8 Years Ago -- The Hayman Wildfire

05 Jul 2010 19:38 #81 by CC

Jun 09 19:15:22 <RFoster> For anyone that wishes to know: I looks like there was some misinformation going round, we got in contact with the people out at the ranch and to total confirmed structures burned there is 2. There's forest damage south of the ranch all the way up to it, But much of the structures appear to be for all intents and purposes fine. One cabin caught fire, but was put out.
Jun 09 19:15:40 <pinecamguy> willie, is that as the ember flies, or via the highway?

Thanks for posting that story, jf1acai. This makes my day. I love to respond to positive and helpful people and their postings. It is a privilege to know all of you who are so active in remembering your contributions as opposed to those who specialize in asinine comments whose only aim is to bait. Wait, I'm off topic. There are no such comments on this thread. Thank you all for sharing and though I hope we will not have another experience like that fires soon, I know to whom I will turn to make my contributions and with whom I want to work hand in hand.

Another article from the DSV archives:

"Do we stay, do we go or do I do what I can " by Sharon Heck

I first heard about the Hayman fire on the radio on a Sunday afternoon. The dj said that there was heavy smoke from out near Ken Caryl. I was concerned but as he clarified things, it sounded like it was quite a ways away and I didn’t think too much more about it. The next morning, driving in to work, I was hearing of potential evacuations in the Sedalia area and starting thinking of a coworker who lives in that area. I was sympathetic as we had been evacuated during the High Meadow fire and I knew how they must be feeling. During the day, I accessed a local website and chat room to find out what was going on. I was so thankful to have some real information as I knew from past experience when we were evacuated for Hi Meadow that the local news media did not provide the level of detail that those most impacted craved. I live in Conifer, however I work in the Tech Center so I wanted to know what was happening as quickly as possible. To add to this situation, my husband is a stay-at-home dad but he doesn’t drive and my daughter, the only other driver in the family, had recently married and was living in California.

I was glad that I was monitoring the chat room as that is where I first heard that my neighborhood was on the “be prepared to evacuate” list. As soon as I saw this notice in chat, I called home to find out why they hadn’t called me only to find out that my husband had been on the phone with his sister so we had not received the emergency alert notification call. I left work immediately and made my hour-long trip home. We started packing the items we wanted to take with us in the event of an evacuation and then we waited. We remained on the “prepare to evacuate” list for the remainder of Hayman, at least twice I was POSITIVE that we’d be receiving the dreaded call to evacuate at any minute. Thankfully, that call never came. I went in to work some days, however thanks to an understanding boss, I was able to stay home when the threat seemed close.

I was in the chat room A LOT and started to feel like I knew the “regulars”. I started seeing calls for assistance for the various fire departments nearby. I felt bad in that I couldn’t help much - I would have volunteered to drive some supplies to various locations but our vehicle was full of “stuff” in case we had to evacuate. Finally, I saw a call for laundry detergent etc and was able to stop and pick some up one of the days that I had gone in to work - I felt like I had helped at least a little. I was amazed at the dedication I saw of a few of the regulars in the chat room, they were in there posting information when I went to sleep and were in there (again or still?) when I got up in the morning. It was obvious that some of these dedicated volunteers were getting very little sleep! I started helping in small ways, relaying information that I had previously seen when new people would come in and ask a question that had been previously answered, etc. I attended a few of the briefings held at Conifer High School and relayed the information gathered for those who had not been able to attend.

I didn’t feel like I had done much but at least I had done what I could.

One final note, after my experience last year and getting involved with the group that created this site, I have now purchased a scanner. I am looking forward to being able to provide updates and helping to spread that workload a little bit so that our hard-working volunteers can get at least a little sleep during the upcoming fire season.

Nice, JF, again, thank you for posting the stories.

I no longer live in the area, but having grown up near there and making it my home for 30 years, my heart is still and always will be there. I still have family (and friends from Grant to Morrison) that live along the corridor from Pine Jct. to Grant. So, my concern and love for the community is immense.

Since I am no longer there, I thought I would pass on a few things I learned to the next person(s) that will step up during the next disaster. Some of it I learned the hard way.... hahaha (like you are going to take a lot of grief if you take stuff to a dept that has been ordered to evacuate)

What I learned:

It takes days, during an emergency, for the government (LOCAL, STATE and FEDERAL) to get through the red-tape and take action. In the early days of any disaster, it is the local resources that are the only ones there to deal with it. This is the time when people can really step-up and help their little local dept. with needs. It is wise to call the chief and find out what they may need because too much stuff they have no need for can cripple limited space and create more problems for the dept. They may need a simple loan of $300 cash for gas for their trucks because to get funds from the main dept. can take a few days they don't have - such as, also, happened in Lake George.

Elk Creek Fire Station and the main Platte Canyon Station are very prepared and have alot of community support and a large group of volunteers, who are not firemen, that will stand up and cook meals, etc... such as the ladies auxiliary.

The smaller stations have very limited resources, limited equipment and far less people that are there to support the firemen.

Once FEMA takes over, everyone goes home and lets them do it. It can be frustrating for the men and women that have worked the disaster night and day to be completely shut-out, but that is the way it is.

HAM operators can be the heart of communications during a disaster when communications are shut-off. They are a vital part of the community and are always willing to step up and help. They are unsung heroes in any community and are highly and well trained. I found a call to the local head of the HAM operators was crucial in getting critical information. Jf and Shiloh-lady are now very involved with the HAMs, you are lucky to have them posting here.

A chat room is important where minute by minute information can be posted by people who are listening to their scanners and to answer questions - live - when someone pops in for up-to-date information is needed, IMO. Then someone needs to take the pertinent info and post it in a thread so people can have a log and read through it. A scanner TEAM is needed so the burden is not put on one or two people. Becky is pretty damn good at relaying scanner info. I nominate her to head the team!

Some of the agencies along the corridor, can help with the collection of funds but keep in mind that if you donate money to say, MRC specifically for a fire, they are limited to the county in which they work. Many of the disasters are going to cross county lines - other then trusting someone who is not a part of an agency to take your donations and trust they will do the right thing with the money, I don't have an answer to what to do about that problem. At one time DSV was taking steps to form a non-profit and be able to collect and distribute funds where ever it was needed. I am not sure if they are still looking at that direction or not. BUT! It needs to be addressed if DSV is not set up to do that.

OK, thanks for listening....

So, you can take donations and distribute them to those that need it, no matter what county? If so, that's great and that problem is solved!
