Maybe so, but the public "perception", as it were, is more along the lines of him being a political pundit and, some would posit, the defacto "voice" of the Republican Party. Just sayin'

His influence? It really hasn't translated to getting his candidates nominated, he didn't like McCain, but the Arizona senator was nominated.
And he prefers Gingrich and Santorum over Romney, but it looks like Mitt will still win the nomination. And these are the hard core Republicans voting in the caucuses and primaries.

Doesn't matter. As you said in one of your other posts regarding rising gas prices, it's more the perception than it is reality.

Really?
CHICAGO -- While slamming Mitt Romney for not standing up to the “strident voices” on his side, a top Obama advisor is planning to spend some quality time with one on his own, The Daily has learned.
David Axelrod, President Obama's senior campaign strategist, is scheduled to appear on Bill Maher's late-night talk show within the next few weeks, according to Kelley Carville, an HBO spokesman.
Axelrod visiting Maher's show as a guest? Only makes sense, if I am spending one million dollars, I want people bowing to me. Wouldn't be shocked if Obama visited Bill after November.

He can still visit if he is president, or invite Bill Maher to the White House to tape a show, like the way Barack was trying to triangulate last January by inviting Bill O'Reilly to the White House for a taped show.
Not like President Obama would have to worry about getting re-elected for a 3rd term.
