VOTE on TUESDAY, MAY 3! CONIFER PARK & REC!

05 Mar 2011 10:02 #1 by BasketWeasel
One of the best-kept secrets in Conifer: There will be an ELECTION on Tuesday, May 3 that will affect your property taxes forever into the future!

The proponents of this measure aim to raise your property taxes for a rec center (regardless of their denials to the contrary).

There will be virtually no mail-ballots. Unless you show up in person in large numbers on Tuesday, May 3, the backers of this proposal will win by quietly getting their own supporters out to the polls. That has always been their game plan--to make it difficult for you to vote while marshaling their own supporters to show up at the polls.

All of us need to write a reminder to ourselves to vote on that day and to get the word out to all our friends and neighbors.

Where is the polling place? Well, the backers of this initiative could easily have provided that information by now, but they don't want it publicized, so they'll probably stall as long as possible before telling us where it is.

Bookmark http://NoRecCenter.org/ As soon as we find out where the polling place will be, we will let you know.

That's a flat out lie. First, this election is to form a rec district not a build a rec center. Second, taxes cannot not raised without a vote of the people. This election is to only create a district and elect a board. There is nothing to be lost by creating a district. Quit making up stuff.

It hasn't been made public because it has NOT yet been determined where it will be, there are still application and approvals to be done. As soon as that stuff is complete it will be announced...again, stop making stuff up.

Geeze Chicken Little.

The first step is to create the district, the next step wil be to ask for taxes or mil levies or “fees”.
Why are they not asking for taxes or fees and this time? Because it allows them to hold a stelth election.

If you are on the Mail in Ballot list with the county you will not receive a mail in ballot as you might expect, you will have to show up in person. Let’s also ask, who is going to count the ballots? Will there be county certified election judges as you would expect in a normal election?

With this recreational district, are talking parks, recreational centers, water fountains, or what? Is that so hard to disclose? Why doesn't anyone tell us what it is that is being proposed?

follow this link, make sure it is page 22, then on the left column read what must be done to receive a mail in ballot, but vote. I am not a jeffco resident, but I am with the Conifer VFW. I believe we have a dog in this fight, as we are part of the Conifer Community. We are against it as it would impact us also since we do alot at Beaver Ranch(Conifer Community Park)/. Things are fine there now, why does a few think they can just walk in, take what is NOT thiers, and change things for thier benefit and the hell with everyone else.

You will not get a mail-in ballot even if you are signed up with Jefferson County as a permanent mail-in voter. Supposedly you can get one by contacting the designated election official by April 26th. I will vote in person just to be on the safe side.

The contact information given is in the HTT is:
Sue Blair, Designated Election Official
C/O Community Resource Services
3855 Lewiston Street, Suite 140
Aurora, CO 80011
Monday-Friday 8 AM to 5 PM
Phone 303-381-4960
Fax 303-381-4961
Email: .

You can get a copy of the approved service plan from the Jefferson County web site http://co.jefferson.co.us/jeffco/ctb_uploads/2010_resos_400-499/10_434ConiferwithExhibits.pdf . It is interesting reading.

The proponents are harping on the NO MILL INCREASE/NO NEW TAXES aspect but if you look at the 10 year financial plan in Exhibit D you see that of the $501,000 in income they are expecting in their first year $493,000 of that comes from PROPERTY TAX and SPECIAL OWNERSHIP TAX. So if the district is formed I would expect a mill levy election every six months or so for eternity or until it is passed.

How much will the mill levy be? On page 13 they say 2 mills but they “may adjust the number of mills at the time of the ballot election” so it could be more. They can also ask the voters to approve multi-year debt (page 15) if the taxes don’t bring in enough money for them.

They will also have the power of eminent domain (page 10). Do you really want another layer of government with the power to take your property for a park or access to one?

What do the citizens of Conifer get for their money? The first year financial plan doles out $344,000 for administrative expenses and only $86,500 for recreation. Another layer of top heavy government, just what we need!

The district organizers have already indebted the district for $70,000 in legal fees just to organize this election (page 17). I’m sorry but I just couldn’t trust a governmental organization that would go to that expense just to win an election.
